Crew chief Frank Stoddard said NASCAR, now that it has the "lucky dog" rule -- allowing the driver a lap down behind the leader the opportunity to get back on the lead lap without having to race back to the flag -- the sanctioning body could opt for double-file restarts, rather than the long-standing single-file restarts. And such double-file restarts could provide a lot more excitement. -- Winston-Salem Journal

Thoughts? It definetly would be exciting.

They already have double file restarts, and the lapped cars on the inside already cause enough problems.

I think it would make for a much more exciting race. And they wouldn't put the slowest cars on the inside, but rather in the back and line the cars up just as they would the starting lineup with the leader on the inside, second would start on the outside, etc. If they did this, they wouldn't have the much slower cars on the inside and the fastest lapped cars would still be able to race for the first car laps down. Would make for two race in one so to speak.

Speaking of doublefile restarts, check this out. The famed Bowman Gray Stadium here in Winston Salem has a unique restart for the featured cars in 100 lap races. With one lap to go, the starter puts a cone in the middle of the start/finish line. When the cars come around the fourth turn in single file in order, each one is faced with the choice of going to the outside or staying on the inside. The first time they did this, it was total chaos, but since then, they have all sort of figured out when to go out there and who they wish to race side-by-side going into the first corner. I know they really can't do that in the Cup races, but wouldn't that be a hoot. Just imagine those guys in the back having a chance to move up. Oh, and only lead lap cars are elligible to move up.

I like it. The Delaware restarts most dirt racing series use has added some excitement and competition to those races.

One thing I have never understood about lining up lapped cars on the inside of the leaders. NASCAR has that as a rule. But as soon as they take the green and come around for the next lap, the flagman is giving them the move-over flag. Well, NASCAR put them there. Do they want them to be there or move over? Think about it.

I would like it. less cautions. No slow cars to hold up the restart.

What interests me, is who made the statement. Frankie doesn't run in but what, 6 races a year, as Boris can afford?

I was thinking the same thing. I have always liked how the lucas oil late models do the delaware restarts. Gets everybody back together and they can race, but the leader still gets to choose where to go at the restart and not be in the mob.

personally, i think it would be too cool........ we have done it some at our local track for special races, and lots of the tourin series do it (dirt)...... would make for exciting green white checker laps...... just use the chose system like Carolina Clash does.... ( place picked on track, field comes to single file, then at that point, you chose, inside or outside....... Funny thing is, if the outside is fast, the first three or four cars line up, the guy in fifth can zip up to inside row 1......... gets interesting quick!!
