Dear Doctor Science,
The Flintstone cars ran on foot power. Why didn't they just walk
instead of pulling the heavy car everywhere?
-- Justin from Hacienda Heights, CA
Fred and Barney both loved nothing more than putting their bare feet to
the road and pushing the caveman version of a Lincoln Continental
around the dusty streets of Bedrock. You'll note you never saw Wilma or
Betty drive, because the ladies lacked the foot and calf power to
propel the monster vehicles. Today's stock and dragster racing is an
homage to those primitive days. Only men drive the noisy race cars and
many of today's racers are named Fred or Barney. Heavy television
coverage of the repetitive competition completes the picture.
