Several years ago one of my son's friends decided he wanted to be a farmer. He was a damm good auto mechanic but hated cars. He joined some co-op, went south and worked for room and board with a minimum stipend and the chance to learn organic farming. He did his homework, he and another guy raised some cash and leased some land in Oregon. Mushroom farmers, shetaki and the like. First year almost 10,000 pounds, last year 25,000 pounds. On track for over 40,000 pounds this year with orders still coming in. The fire in Merlin, Oregon took it all. He still did auto work on the side, all his tools are gone, his work truck gone, his 24 foot camper that didn't run but he lived in, gone.
Clothes on his back and his dog heading back in a old beat up Subaru, he's devastated.
