The novelty’s wearing off
Juan Pablo Montoya, praised profusely during the season’s early races, is now facing criticism for his stubborn refusal to get out of the way in races in which his car isn’t a factor.
Denny Hamlin said racing was surprisingly civil at the tight, egg-shaped track, adding that there were only “one or two” drivers who caused problems. When pressed, he quickly identified Montoya as “one of the ones I was talking about.”
For his part, Montoya blamed early contact with another car with ruining the handling characteristics of his Dodge. The other car was driven by the other driver, A.J. Allmendinger, most criticized for blocking and getting in the way.
“The ‘84’ (Allmendinger) hit us and hit us and hit us again, and then I went in there behind him,” said Montoya. “I let him through, and he went in really slow, so I went for the bottom. As soon as I went for the bottom, he checked up, and I ran into the back of him and damaged the front.”
