Do drivers ever get bored during a long race? I know that the beginning of a race and the end are exciting, but what about the middle part where the drivers are either just hanging around or taking those several hundred laps to set themselves up for a dash to the finish line?

I think that even if you are running 19th , the guy in 20th will do about anything to get that spot, so you have to race him hard to keep the track position that you have. Later in the race ,making up spots that you have lost is all but impossible. So no.I don't think that you can relax , if it means losing ground to the leader .

It may get a bit tedious at certain tracks, I guess.

But I doubt that drivers get bored at Bristol. And when they are racing at Michigan or Fontucky, they are diving off into Turn One at over 200 MPH on every lap. That's probably sufficient to keep one's attention focused!

Who was it a few years back that was asking his spotter to try and get some Hottie in the stands number??? Obviously his mind was Wandering :D

I like long races with no cautions. Especially pit cycles under the green, I think more errors occur then and it separates the best from the rest.

A great scenario imo, long cycles and tires that loose a little grip. Watching a veteran manage them wisely, and taking control at the end of the cycles.

When its working it's magic and the racing can never last too long.

So I am not expecting drivers to ever loose focus.

What about Daytona and Talladega where many drivers elect to just cruise along at the back-of-the-pack until late in the race. they have little interest in actual racing trying to get the lead or to gain spots among the cars.

I've said for a long time I would rather watch 10 50-lap and/or mile races in the same day than one 500 lap/miler. Give points for each win. That would shake things up.

Certainly not every weekend, still have some long races, but I think the competition on the track would be WAY more intese with 50 lap races.

I wonder what the reaction would be to a double header like indycar did this year in (was it) Texas.

Cause Talladega and Daytona ain't really racing, maybe?

And yes, Dirty, it was Texas. Interesting concept - except for the blind draw for starting positions in Race Two.

agreed. They kinda already have it- The Gatorade Duels.

Wasn't it Pocono a couple years back that Stewart said he had to do all he could just to stay awake in the car. Not to mention all the questions for football scores during the races recently lol.

I'd say Pocono is really boring. Add in Cali, Michigan and most cookie cutter tracks. Restarts and the last few laps are probably the only time it's not boring.

I remember an in-car shot of Tony Stewart at INDY where he took both hands off the steering wheel while getting himself a drink.

What is Zippy's contract status? Any chance he will be looking for something better next year?

Probably isn't gonna make much difference if Tony wins the championship this year. Be hard for Tony to tell Grubb after they win the championship that hes out. But sounds like there is some noise being made about this that he might still leave. I'd love to see Zippy back on the box for Tony though.

There were rumors about Zippy going to SHR and Grubb moving to the 10 car with Miss Thang. But if that's not gonna be a full time effort, it's hard to say.

And rumors are just speculation in drag...
