Due to sponsorship conflict, 17 crew can't win

From Jayski:

NASCAR's new pit-crew competition has a flaw this season: the man with the fastest pit crew on the stock-car tour, Matt Kenseth, has sponsorship contracts with Gatorade, a Pepsi product. The NASCAR pit-crew competition is sponsored by rival Coca-Cola and PowerAde. So when NASCAR releases weekly standings, Kenseth's team isn't included, which makes the award competition all but useless. In fact, according to one report, Kenseth was so displeased in Victory Lane at Las Vegas when Coca-Cola sponsorship promoters put bottles of PowerAde on his car that he deliberately knocked them all off.

This is getting ridiculous. Does EVERYTHING need a sponsor? This is worse than the Olympics for Pete's sake.

Interesting,

I knew that Matt had "removed" the Powerade from his roof after the race but associated that with hsi Gatorade deal. Did not make the connection with pit crew deal.

That pit crew competition is kind of a joke anyway. Basically it times the total amount of time a ar spends on pit road during each race, and the lowest toal wins. So many factors are in that deal besides the pit crew skills that it holds little meaning to me.

It is not a new idea either. The same award was going on back in the 80's, sponsored by Ingersoll Rand or its precedent, who's name eludes me at the moment.

Me, I'll wait for the pit crew championship at Rockingham this fall......They are still doing that one aren't they? I like that as a measure of the over the wall gangs skill.

LOL,
that is ridiculous. Good for Matt for showing he's a person not a sponsor's puppet.

I love the pit crew competition. It give the crew a chance to show how important they are. I think they should consider adding more events through out the year. One test out of 36 weeks leaves a lot of luck to play in the event. maybe 3 times a year. It would help to see who progesses the most through out the year.

Is it the winston, where the qualifying run includes a pit stop?

If I was on that 17 pit crew I would walk through the pits at every Winston Cup race Knowing we "WIN" the pit stop competition every time the car hits the track.....screw coca-cola and thier power-aid .

If I was The Jack in the hat I would give that pit crew a bonus every week.

Yep, the 6,48,17,and I believe Newman or Gordon can not either.
Because Gatorade sponsors their cars, not Powerade.

Whats next Marlin or Rusty can not win the BUD POLE?!

From what I heard, Matt just took the three bottles off the roof & tossed them onto the seat in his car & then grabbed a Gatorade & took a drink. Not quite as dramatic as Jayski's story made it out to be.
