Who's the dumb ass? The coach or parent? As a parent of 2 kids who competed in both in and out of scool sports, LL, Softball,PeeWee football etc I can say without hesitation that given a whistle some coaches go on a power trip and I have seen altercations between parent and coach. But I'm sure there's more to the story.

When I was that kids age, if I had got in trouble and had to run laps for something like that, my dad would have thanked the coach for teaching me some discipline and then at least yelled at me when we got home. And possibly more depending on his mood and what else I had done before that.
