DAYTONA BEACH, Fla -- Driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. was penalized with a loss of 25 championship driver points and a $10,000 fine for an inappropriate post-race comment during the live national television broadcast of Sunday's NASCAR Nextel Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway, NASCAR officials announced Tuesday.

Earnhardt Jr., driver of the No. 8 Chevrolet, was in violation of Section 12-4-A (Actions detrimental to stock car racing) of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series Rule Book for using inappropriate language.

The penalty also will extend to the team as Dale Earnhardt Inc. will lose 25 championship owner points for the actions of its driver.

Earnhardt Jr.'s championship points total will be adjusted from 5,543 points to 5,518 as a result of the penalty, and will drop him from first to second in the Chase for the NASCAR Nextel Cup.

Kurt Busch and Roush Racing will assume the lead with 5,530 points, 12 ahead of Earnhardt Jr. and DEI, respectively.

I for one am shocked. Looks like alot of us around here (me included) are going to get a tasty dish of crow. Somebody pass the hot sauce. Mmmmmm good, taste like chicken. EMP, that hat will be a little harder to digest. Good thing crow is on the menu.

I figured he might get a fine but, not the points deduction. Kudos t NASCAR for being consistent on this one.

This will be one of thoes years when people will say "_______ the real 2004 winner" Just like the Mark Martin year.

I'm satisfied he got docked. Let it be a lesson for the future, for all drivers, and crew. I don't agree with the rule, because on the radio and the tv you hear worse than that, but rules are the rules.

Kurt Busch has a chance along with the top 4 to win the Cup now.... since he got docked 25 pts.... i am happy that Dale Jr got docked 25pts, if he didnt i bet yea Johny Sauter and Clearance Brewco would be bitching becuase they got docked points and fined earlier this season.

How true!

Gee..................................NASCAR did something consistant???????

It isn't like all the drivers weren't warned!!!!!! Doesn't matter if the offensive word was used in anger ir jubilation. It was used. The English language has plenty of
other descriptive words to express joy and happiness!!!!!!!!!

And yes, before you ask or insinuate, if Jeff Gordon had done the same. I would expect the same penalties for him as well!!!!!!!!!

NASCAR is a "FAMILY SPORT", most of us don't like the litttle ones in our families to hear or be exposed to that kind of dirt. God knows, they hear it soon enough in school.

S'cuse me if I don't laff. I fail to see any humor there.
If you are trying to say that using foul language is funny and acceptable, then I ain't looking at it like some do.

That kind of language, espoused by some to be "colorful" and "expressive" is
not necessary. There are too many "clean" words in the English language that would say the same thing!!!!!!!!!!! JMHO

Just because he's pumped doesnt give him the right to shoot the "S" bomb! He deserves the fine and the deleting of points....Just fining him wont do a hill of beans as a punishment! Deleting his points should make him think twice before shooting off his mouth; especially during the CHASE!

And if it were Jeff Gordon, would you be singing the same tune?

You better believe it. ANY driver would deserve the same monetary fine and point deduction for the SAME offense. The drivers have been warned numerous times to pay close attention to the words that they choose to speak, and if they don't they will pay the price for them.

Oh, and I have seen Jeff Gordon and many more in the height of excitement and anger catch themselves just a split second BEFORE they said the bad word.

Kenseth is not a zombie. He's a robot remember. I agree with what Nascar did. At least they did unto Jr as they did unto others.

I believe Kenseth is merely acting his age and showing some respect for others.

Jr is growing on me as a driver and he is developing into a top driver. That said, I agree with dragonlady' post. The penalty should get all of the teams attention that they are serious about filthy language.

WideOpenPhoto, something that has been bothering me, do we really want to turn the Nascar forum into a political forum.
Moderators, hope that I am not overstepping with my comment. Pls delete it if you have a problem with it.

Pumped up?????????? I bet he's pumped down right about now :p

Okay, they did it..........I still believe it's a little heavy handed but that's just my opinion! Isn't that 50 points Jr's lost this season? The first 25 points were well deserved since his actions definitely effected the outcome of a race. The second I really don't agree with..........but it's done. Time to kick some b... oops, I mean behind!! :( Deliberate use of foul or offensive language should never be tolerated, but using words that about 99% of us use on occasion when we are excited and jumping up on the lets be saints bandwagon is a more than a little hypocritical..........again just my opinion here. :)

One good thing.........y'all can't be too vocal about NASCAR's inconsistency anymore!!

Hey, what if Jr wins the Championship anyway? Well anyone acknowledge his skill then? Or will it be the same old story about NASCAR tilting the scales to their favored sons? :D

Shoot, I acknowledge his talent now. He is a very good driver and will get better.

What if what if.
WHat if Jeff wins 8 cups will jr/sr fans acknowledge he was a better driver then sr?

lol jk

Seriously Im glad nascar is finally being consistant on something involving jr. I hope they stick to their guns about it.

Note: I already acknoledge jr has very good driving abilities.

No reason to joke about that, Smack! :) I put together some stats a couple years ago on this very board showing wins to starts, laps lead to starts, and championships to starts. Those stats were on several drivers both past and present. Jeff Gordon beat everyone hands down........encluding Dale Sr. There is no doubt in my mind about Jeff. However, stats are fluid...........they change as time moves on. At the time I did that little exercise if Jeff continued on his present course I think I predicted him overtaking Dale Sr somewhere around Jeff's 15th in the series...........but that prediction, if I took the time to do it again would likely be different (which way, I don't know). But Jr was not one of the drivers I put numbers to........I can't say one way or the other. Besides, the "who's best" argument is almost entirely subjective...........numbers really mean nothing to the fans of a particular driver. Jr, like Jeff, have huge fan bases and those fans will point out stats, qualities, and traits that are completely impossible to prove. It's what you want to believe and what you choose to believe that makes a difference. That's how so many conspiracy theories jump up all the time about both Jeff and Jr.........more Jr now since the Jeff conspiracy stuff is old hat anymore!! :) But, the conspiracies are the same.........just different names and car numbers. :D

The Jr haters (like the Bush haters) will never stop.........no matter how irrational they are. Those are the people I was referring to when I asked if they would acknowledge Jr's driving skill. Not you, or any open minded NASCAR fan.

agreed. I'm getting a towel and wiping the egg off My face right now. NASCAR threw a lot of Us a curve on this one, guess They were backed into a corner and couldn't wiggle out of fining and reducing the points for Dale Jr.

I agree about the political posts,IMHO thise do not belong in a NASCAR forum, there are other boards for such lively debates and discussions. ;)

Actually though, those first 25 were thrown out with everything else (including the lead Jeff had earned over the rest of the field) after 26 races.

On another note...

I definitely agree with the fine and the points penalty in this case, but only because there was a precedent set with penalizing others the same way earlier.

In my opinion the fine is a good thing, but the points penalty isn't right in either case. I just don't see where saying something stupid is grounds for giving someone else a competitive advantage over that driver.

That being said, Junior knew the rules and he knew the penalty that would likely result from violating said rule. And he did what he did anyway. I'm not sure if it was done in a effort to look cool or what, but it was foolish and he cost his team dearly by his immaturity. :(
