Earnhardt Jr.: Time to give Teresa a break

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dale Earnhardt Jr. wants everyone to lay off Teresa Earnhardt, his stepmother who currently runs Dale Earnhardt Inc. Asked if he felt for the fans with the No. 8 tattoo now that he could not keep the number, Earnhardt Jr. said that he did feel pretty bad and that it was out of his control.
And then he asked people to cool down ongoing remarks directed at Teresa Earnhardt.

"I do want to say that I think it's about time we give Teresa a break," he said Friday at Bristol Motor Speedway. "She makes the decision on that number because she owns it and as much as I am disappointed and frustrated over the fact that I don't get to keep driving the No. 8, the stuff that I read on the Internet and the stuff that I'm hearing is going on, the remarks about her, directed toward her, I don't think anybody deserves that. If people just take a step back and look, she hasn't done anything intentionally detrimental to me.
"I've got a good future, I've got a good opportunity in my hands, she's doing what she feels like she needs to do and I just think everybody needs to lay off a little bit. She was married to my daddy and I know he wouldn't be too happy about it, what's going on, what's being said about her. It bothers me a little bit."

On Nascar.com it tells what it is really about. Taylor...
I thought it might be PR till I read that. I admire him for worring about her.

"I hate to see somebody be crucified on the Internet like Teresa has," Earnhardt said. "She's got a daughter that goes to school, that's got friends and she has to put up with that stuff. It's just hardcore, man.
"People have been really, really rude and really way over the line on some of the things that have been said. I know Teresa doesn't know half of it because she won't read it and she won't put up with it. If anybody in their right mind knew that was going on they wouldn't be around it and deal with it.

"But it still gets back to Taylor. Nobody deserves that. It ain't fair."

I am a fan of the younger Earnhardt, but I've got to say that he is the reason for all of this. If he had in the beginning, just didn't say a thing about the number and went on to what would/will become his new number, there would have naturally been a bunch of BS said about this or that, but it wouldn't have reached the the heights that it has now. I think that Jr. probably looked back and realized what has become of it all and wishes that he hadn't said a thing. It would have been much easier for him and all involved had nothing been said and only the fans and media made a mess of it all. Now, it's going to be much harder for anyone to reduce the damage.

I still give him much credit though for speaking up at this time. It is way too easy to look back and say what should have been done. Kudos to Jr.

When he says "everyone" I wonder just who he is referring to? Come on Jr., why not just say it?

He caused this whole mess from the beginning.

He may have started it, but I have never heard one derogatory word out of his mouth about Teresa or DEI. Yes, he has said that relations are not the best, but he has never publicly called Teresa anything that I would consider derogatory.

I'll have to agree with Patrick on this one. He had to come out & say this....damage control of what he started...he needs to realize that there are lots of sheeple out there that can't think or form an opinion on their own & his words are the gospel to those fans. I am glad he said something, though. Shows he felt guilty about the whole mess.

I don't recall ever reading anything derogatory about her on here but I can imagine that there are some places where people are being much less than flattering.

I suppose he has to do what he can calm the red hat mafia.
