SCENEDAILY - 00:09AM ET TUESDAY JUNE 19, 2007 - BY MICHAEL SMITH - SPORTING NEWS NASCAR WIRE SERVICE

GRANT HALVERSON / GETTY IMAGESWhile Dale Earnhardt Jr. was choreographing his move to Hendrick Motorsports, his marketing team at JR Motorsports has been working on an apparel deal with Adidas that could put his own line of ClimaCool wear in major sporting goods retailers, a place where NASCAR has had no presence.

Earnhardt Jr. announced last week that he's going to drive for Hendrick Motorsports in 2008, giving that team a powerhouse stable that also includes Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. But Earnhardt Jr.'s own endorsement muscle is again evident in the deal with Adidas, which is believed to be a separate agreement from Earnhardt Jr.'s new relationship at Hendrick. It's uncertain if the Adidas relationship might blossom into a team sponsorship deal.

NASCAR-related apparel and merchandise essentially has been nonexistent in the top sporting goods chains and Adidas' relationships in that space could provide a significant distribution push for Earnhardt's apparel.

"This is a very interesting strategy," said Neil Schwartz, an analyst for SportSCAN Info, a West Palm Beach, Fla., firm that tracks the sporting goods industry. "There is a lot of NASCAR merchandise sold, but a lot of it is online, and the at-track business is monumental. What you haven't seen is a lot of lifestyle apparel, jerseys (and) golf shirts."

Mark Dyer, NASCAR's vice president of licensing and consumer products, called apparel "the least-developed part of the sport." Although Dyer didn't talk specifically about the Adidas deal, he said any development in that area "could pave the way for major athletic apparel companies to take a meaningful position in the sport."

Starter, a Nike brand, entered NASCAR earlier this year with a team deal at Joe Gibbs Racing, and it also had Motorsports Authentics develop a line of merchandise for trackside sales and other distribution. Starter has negotiated through the spring with other teams, as well as NASCAR's licensing office, and more team deals are expected by the end of the year. Reebok also has talked to NASCAR about footwear and apparel deals.

Earnhardt Jr., though, was looking to go in a different direction. Sources say he was more interested in the "lifestyle" approach that Adidas offered through its ClimaCool brand, which could include Dale Jr. jerseys, performance T-shirts or other mainstream sportswear, as well as footwear. No launch date for any lifestyle line could be determined.

Adidas' power at big retailers such as Foot Locker and The Sports Authority should push Earnhardt Jr. apparel into the sports specialty channel, but a lifestyle play also might be considered a disconnect with Adidas' significant positioning as a performance brand, with on-court apparel rights.

The association with Earnhardt's "everyman" reputation does, however, give Germany-based Adidas more of a red, white and blue feel. Earnhardt Jr. currently counts Wrangler jeans among his sponsors.

"He's about as American as you can get, and that probably transfers to any foreign brand that took Junior on," said Frank Vuono, a principal at 16W Marketing, Rutherford, N.J., and the former head of the NFL's consumer products business.

Meanwhile, team owner Rick Hendrick offered no sponsorship news last week on Earnhardt Jr.'s new ride. Although Budweiser has made it clear that it's interested in continuing its relationship with Earnhardt Jr., other sponsor conflicts must be navigated. Kellogg's and Carquest have a contract to be co-primary sponsors on Hendrick's No. 5 car -- the one that will be vacated by Kyle Busch to make room for Earnhardt Jr. -- through 2009.

"I thought it was a brilliant move on Hendrick's part to make the announcement with no sponsor," said Mark Coughlin, executive vice president of Octagon Racing. "What he's basically saying is that he's confident in the powerhouse he's built that he'll find a corporation to step up and pay a premium price."

Budweiser and Hendrick have a history -- Bud sponsored the No. 25 car from 1995 to 1999. Marketing analysts anticipate Bud will find its way onto Earnhardt Jr.'s car.

"I can't think of any reason it wouldn't happen," said Steve Lauletta, president of The Radiate Group.

Monster? Pepsi? Adidas? Dale Jr's 2008 sponsor? Captain Thunder reports....am hearing that Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick has been in talks with two beverage sponsors for Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s racecar for 2008. One is Pepsi and the other is Monster Energy. Pepsi has had a running relationship with Hendrick for many years as they have shared the sponsorship of Jeff Gordon's #24 car with the DuPont Corporation. Monster Energy has had a recent relationship with Dale Jr. and JR. Motorsports. Monster is all set to sponsor the late model car that Supercross legend Jeremy McGrath will drive for JR. Motorsports this year for a 10-race run. Look for an announcement soon as teams must have sponsorships and car numbers to the merchandise manufacturers for merchandise to be ready for February's Speed Weeks in Daytona.(Captain Thunder site)

oh ok....thats a great reason to hate a driver...........

Nah, I got nothing personal against Junior, or Mikey, or anyone for that matter. When Mikey left DEI I found that he dropped completely off my radar. I couldn't care less. When Lil'E goes to HMS will I become a Junior supporter, probably not. He may elevate himself to a Mears level. That depends on his fans.
In much the same way as I hate all things related to unc-CH because of their arrogant prick fans I feel the same about Lil'E. I have some friends that are fans of unc-CH. I've even treated them to a State-Carolina BB game. But, they actually graduated from the school and for the most part don't exhibit those characterisitics of the typical Wal-Mart Carolina fan.
And, let's be truthful. A lot of Junyer Nation is of the Wal-Mart variety. Add to that they are rude, crude and for the most part socially unacceptable, I just can't associate with such.
Now if Junyer Nation deserts Lil'E as many of the Wal-Mart fans are threatening then he may become more palatable.

Lets be truthful...many of nascar fans are what you call "Walmart" fans, i dont think Jr fans are any different than any other fans.

i think the comment that jr can be elevated to mear's level is a little out of hand...i suggest you take a look at mear's stats and then turn around and take a look at Jr's stats.

and yes...go Heels.....i cant pull for the "i cant compete in basketball, so lets try to make our school a football school and we failed at that too." state boys, nor could i pull for the "let me stick my nose up at you while i walk by" dookies.

I'm not comparing Lil'E to Mears on a proficient level but rather on how I will support them as a driver. ie I don't pull for or against Mears but if he's going to finish well I don't kick the cat. Or if he's going to do badly I don't drown my sorrows in brew.

Oh, and GO RICE... :D

Sounds good.....i apologize for reading your statement incorrectly.

And to be completely honest with you...I am a heels fan...but first and foremost i am a Catamount from Western Carolina....Go Catamounts!

As to Carolina fans, they look down on anyone who didn't graduate from there. They refer to their Wal-Mart fans as "sidewalk alums". Its the other schools that refer to them as Wal-Mart fans since the majority of them couldn't find Chapel Hill if you spotted them Derm. They're just fans because they win.
As to Carolina, Orange county has the largest collection of PHD's and those that can't spell PHD of any county in NC.
Most Carolina fans wouldn't be accepted by the Admissions Office at unc-CH.
They have long since quit being the University of the People. Rather they have become the People's Republic of Chapel Hill judging by their political beliefs being forced onto the young skulls of mush that matriculate their.
And, yes I have a few Carolina friends but they are screened thoroughly and we seldom talk sports or politics.

Screened thoroughly? LOL thats pretty good.

Boys, boys, boys! bp, may I assume that you are a Wolfpack fan? TBFM is as he says, a Carolina fan, so all I've got to say to the two of you is...Who went to the Orange Bowl (and of course lost, but they did win the right to go)? Go Deacs! :)

My household is a weird one in that both the wife and I are avid race fans, but we really aren't the "usual" types of fans per se. I actually think that I'm more in line of what most people think are NASCAR fans as I can hang out in the parking lot, listening to country music, drink much beer and argue who is better in football, but knowing the real subject there would be whose on the track. The wife on the other hand, is a lady who came from a "highbrow" family. And to make matters worse for you two, she's a grad of ECU, so she's a Pirate, which makes her all the better in my eyes. :) The kids, the daughter is a grad of UNCG and is so liberal that I keep my mouth shut when she's around. :) Her husband went to Vanderbilt, but neither of them could care less about racing. The son went to UNC Pembroke but gave up after the first year and then married a girl who graduated from...UNC CH. When they are in town, everything has to be Carolina Blue, but neither of them would be caught dead at a race track.

But I have to agree with TBFM in that the way you described Junior fans probably fit the majority of the racing fans. I've always said this sport is more emotional than just about any other sport, with the exception of maybe soccor world wide. And though there are but 43 combantants at each event, there are more drivers and so there are also many more fans.

Oh, I forgot, I went to school at a small school in northwest Oklahoma and though I would root for them whenever, my heart lies with those Sooners.

Once again, Goooooo Deacs! :beerbang:

Buck...Deacs are the school that many people from NC have forgotten about...i dont have a hatred for them as i do Puke and Hate...you always kinda gotta pull for them to do good.....as a North Carolinan...i was proud of them for doing so good last year.

boo to ECU though!

Yeah Weak Forest did good. The question is can they sustain that level or how far do they fall. With 85 scholarships the days of domination by a particular team are over. Teams like USC or OSU will have a good run because of their players but I don't think we'll see a team like Bear Bryant's Alabama again.

Now, as to Junyer Nation, maybe they are so obnoxious because there are so many of them and they feel safer in numbers. This allows the worst in some of them to come out. But, in the races I've been to it's invariably a Lil'E fan that's showing his ass. I seldom see poor behavior from other fans. And, maybe it's not fair to paint all of Junyer Nation with the same brush but like the Muslims need to reign in their worse elements possibly Lil'E fans need to do the same.

As to unc-CH fans, esp the Wal-Mart variety, there's no hope for them. Their arrogance and sense of self importance are beyond salvation. Each time I swear I'm not going back to Kenan but then tickets go on sale and I can't help myself. And, as to the ACC I'd have to say the Clemson fans are the best. I haven't been to UM or BC and I've only been to VT twice so I really can't say. FSU fans are good. UMd fans are by far the worse of any fan base I've ever been to and we go to a lot of away games.

My girlfriend and i went to a VT game this year, she went to Southern Miss and the VT game was the closest one to that we could get too. Let me say this, the VT fans were great, i cant tell you how many people stopped us and said "welcome to blacksburg" as we were walking to our seats.
