DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) - While Dale Earnhardt Jr. waited out the rain in his motorhome, NASCAR inspectors found an illegal part on his Chevrolet.

The rear wing on his Car of Tomorrow was mounted incorrectly, and NASCAR confiscated the brackets used to hold it in place during the pre-race inspection Saturday night at Darlington Raceway.
It was the first misstep this week for Junior, who dominated nearly every conversation in the garage during a heavy rain storm that delayed the race that was eventually postponed until Sunday at 1 p.m.

The same question was asked in every corner of the garage: What's Junior going to do?

At least five car owners are officially interested, including newcomer Bobby Ginn, who promised to vigorously pursue NASCAR's most popular driver to his upstart team.

"We would stretch as hard as we could stretch to do it," Ginn said. "You want the best, the absolute best, and I love the idea that Dale wants to win championships. He could accomplish that here with us.

"We're in play."

Junior was silent Saturday, two days after announcing he would leave Dale Earnhardt Inc. at the end of the season. It makes him the most coveted free agent in NASCAR history, but his options might actually be limited.

Ray Evernham said Saturday he wanted 15 minutes to talk with Earnhardt, but doubted it would get him anywhere.

"It's like trying to get a date with Jennifer Aniston - if you see her, you've got to at least ask," he said.

Because Earnhardt wants to stay with a Chevrolet team, Dodge owners Evernham, Roger Penske and Chip Ganassi know they don't have much of a chance. But Evernham, who fields a red No. 9 for Kasey Kahne, thought he could make the loudest pitch among the Dodge camp.

"I've got a lot of red paint," he said, "and we both want to win championships."

Junior cited his desire to win a championship, and his belief that DEI is not currently capable of doing that, as his reason for leaving his late father's team.

Three Chevrolet teams are believed to be the front-runners, and car owner Richard Childress has already expressed his interest. Hendrick Motorsports has been silent on the Junior debate, and Joe Gibbs Racing indicated it might not be a good fit for Earnhardt.

Although Earnhardt is close with JGR drivers Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin, team president J.D Gibbs said they aren't currently looking to expand to four teams. JGR also fields a car for J.J. Yeley.

And, the Gibbs' focus on promoting a family values image would make it difficult to bring Budweiser on as a sponsor, he said. Budweiser, Earnhardt's longtime sponsor, is expected to go with him wherever he lands.

"Personally, that would be hard for us," Gibbs said. "I'd just leave it at that right now. I'm not sure that would fit for us."

Gibbs said the team has no immediate plans to pursue Earnhardt, but wouldn't lock the door if the driver came knocking.

"Who wouldn't want a chance to talk to Dale Jr.? When the time's right, we'd love to sit down and talk," Gibbs said. "I'm watching it unfold like you guys are."

Earnhardt's rivals are anxiously watching every development, knowing that his signing could start a domino effect.

Several other drivers have already been thrown into the rumor mill: Ryan Newman to JGR, David Gilliland to DEI, Yeley out at JGR, Martin Truex Jr. looking for an out at DEI. It doesn't matter if none of its true - until Junior signs, the gossip will fly.

And as the car owners try to be tightlipped, only Ginn is strongly on record to be interested.

The Florida land developer bought a midlevel team last July and markedly improved it in just a few short months. Following an aggressive long-range plan, Ginn snagged Mark Martin and expanded the operation to three cars.

Then Martin nearly won the Daytona 500, while opening the season with the best start of his career.

He briefly led the points standings before bowing out on top. He's running a partial schedule this season and is currently ranked 14th despite sitting out three of 10 races.

Existing drivers Sterling Marlin and Joe Nemechek have been considerably stronger this season, with Marlin as the only driver not ensured a spot in the field to qualify for the first five races of the year.

Ginn also beefed up his driver development package, where he's tucked away 15-time motocross champion Ricky Carmichael.

"We have a five-year plan in mind and the conclusion is winning a championship," Ginn said. "We took a risk on Mark Martin, and that's paid off in spades for us. We aren't afraid to be aggressive."

The team leases its motors from Hendrick and is perceived to be a satellite of that powerful operation. It's gotten Ginn mentioned as an outside equation in the Earnhardt race, but the team clearly wants to be a viable option.

"He is the man in NASCAR," Martin said. "We would certainly like to talk to him."

Ginn thinks his team suits Earnhardt because he runs it like a family operation and would fit much of what Junior is looking for. Earnhardt ideally would like to complement JR Motorsports, the Busch Series operation he owns, with his next employer.

Dale Earnhardt followed that model by driving for Childress while developing DEI, and Ginn thinks Junior can do it with him.

"Listening to what Dale has outlined, his Busch operation would dovetail beautifully with us," Ginn said. "We believe he'd be a good fit. Our DNA's match, our cultures are alike."

Earnhardt reiterated Friday that he's looking for a winner.

"I could live without winning a championship, but I would have to," he said. "But I don't want to. I want to win a championship and I want to win more races. I want to win on a regular basis."

It's why he'll take some time away to decompress before he makes the next biggest decision in his life. He wants his next employer to be his last after six-plus seasons at his late father's company. Junior has won 17 races at DEI, but the program has been on a slow decline since his father's 2001 death.

Junior wanted 51 percent ownership to stay with the company, but stepmother Teresa wouldn't turn over control. So he's parting ways and should have no shortage of suitors.

"I would like to take a week or two to clear my mind a little bit, drink some beers and have some fun," he said. "I have felt about as un-normal as I possibly could the past few days. Lost a lot of sleep. So I want to relax and just clear my head and get in a good football stance to go after this new deal that we're seeking."

Interesting article, Starts out as Jr. fails inspection article for a few sentences and turns into a where's Jr. going masterpiece. I'm sorry but I laughed my rear end at this quote thinking about Tony Stewart.

well, i believe the driver has no direct way or reason to tamper with the brackets, so i hope JR isn't penalized and teresa gets a 5x,xxx penalty for it.

Ginn Racing appears to me to be on the verge of becominga formidable player in NASCAR. Martin has shown what these guys can do. A bit of extra cash from Budweiser and who knows where this team can go.

Ginn - not a chance

Gibbs - maybe, but he will have to go with a new sponsor...GM Goodwrench???

RCR - now we are talking...could be in the 3 or 33. Bud/Goodwrench

HMS - I belive in 08 JR will be in the #25 Bud car. With Jeff Gordon listed as the owner. Mears will go to Busch (or what ever it is called then)

You know...I've seen people with families who actually drink beer

But I see Gibbs's point as Stewart simply exudes that wholesome family guy quality that you want in a race car driver.

Illegal wing brackets on #8 car could mean penalty: During pre-race inspection Saturday at Darlington Raceway, the #8 Budweiser Chevy of Dale Earnhardt Jr. was found to have illegal brackets used to mount the rear wing on the Nextel Cup Series' new Car of Tomorrow, an infraction series director John Darby said could result in the first COT penalty. Officials forced the team to remove the brackets, then reattach the wing with a proper set. "We have specific blueprints for all the parts on the car," Darby said. "[Series officials] are a little sensitive to those parameters." Asked if doctoring the rear wing on the COT is a substantial no-no, Darby responded, "Yes." The infraction will not affect Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s starting position for the rain-delayed Dodge Avenger 500, Darby said. Darby said he plans to speak with #8 crew chief Tony Eury Jr. further next week.(ESPN.com)(5-13-2007)

Ginn - not a chance

Funny you say that..I think they have a better chance than Hendrick. Why would Dale want to become just "another" team driver when he could be "the" teams driver ??

Gibbs - maybe, but he will have to go with a new sponsor...GM Goodwrench???

Not gonna happen, IMO

RCR - now we are talking...could be in the 3 or 33. Bud/Goodwrench

This is a good possibility, but I think you're dreaming about the 3 car.

Again, why would he want to be just one of the Hendrick guys?I think hes more likely to start his own team than drive for hms.

Why would the team get to keep their starting position ?? If it was caught in prerace inspection, then it must have been illegal during qualifying ?? This sounds like more inconsistency.

Its because NASCAR thinks Lil'E will eventually sign with Hendrick so they are just getting practice of overlooking all the illegal stuff so he can take his place at the top behind Jeff and maybe in front of Jimmie... :D

I may be wrong, but i think i seen where JR would like to drive for HMS. Plus this is just one of two or three teams that he could posabily will a cup with.

About the 3 car, just an idea. I really dont think it will happan myself. If he goes to RCR it will most likly be the 33.

The only way i can see him going to Gibbs is if he drives the 18 Interstate car, or Gibbs starts a new team, with a sponsor besides Bud.

Ginn - I have been impressed up Mark, but besides that the team seems not to have done to much. Even with some exter money from Bud, i still don't think that will improve the team that much.

It will come down between RCR and HMS. and as of now, i am leaning toward HMS.

Illegal bracket??? C'mon, how ****ing stupid is this getting. NASCAR's already supplying the friggin' wing. It doesn't say that the wing wasn't at the right angle ... so what's the ****ing problem this time? Did they dare design a bracket better than what GAWD himself has mandated???

GIMME A ****ING BREAK ALREADY. IROC sucked **** because every car was a ****ing clone.

C'mon Prof, don't hold back. Tell us how you really feel... :D

How about this scenario.
Earnhardt, Hendrick and Jeff Gordon, OR, Hendrick and Earnhardt sans Gordon, forming a new corporate race team designed as Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Racing.

Why ??? This gives Earnhardt the opportunity to call the shots, the benefit of getting the best technical information available and sharing vital information among consistent championship contending teams, and what is arguably the most successful racing group in NASCAR, ever, while being supplied with reliable, high performing engines.

This could be a win, win situation for Earnhardt and Hendrick and if Jeff Gordon were involved, all three, making it a win, win, win deal. What could be more productive in the quest for a championship than being privvy to Monday morning barnstorming sessions with Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson's race team crew chiefs and the drivers themselves ???

As to RCR, friendship and the years Dale Sr. spent driving for RCR might not necessarily be enough of a motivating factor for Dale to sign on.
Dale, Jr., wants a championship and what organization is best suited to offer that than Rick Hendrick.
Do not discount JGR, but that doesn't seem likely for a variety of reasons and neither does Evernham.

Meanwhile, HMS continues to develop teamwork, design, strategy, consistency, low employee turnover and just about anything else one might imagine to produce a top contending race team for Dale Earnhardt.

No matter the outcome, IMO, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., is doing what is right for him. I respect Dale, Jr. for his attitude, discipline, business savvy, and the way he approached and continues to deal with the media and all other aspects of his career.

I am not on the "Junior Nation" bandwagon, my personal observation is of a young man who is very astute and one NASCAR can be proud to say represents their sport and deserving of respect.

Oh this is so hard, I am not and never was a Earnhardt fan of any kind. I was one of the ones who loved to hate SR. I know my nephew won't be seeing this so I will write it. I agree with what you said. :growl:

Why Dale Jr. expects penalty

Posted: Monday May 14, 2007 07:11AM ET
Tony Eury Jr. fully expects a penalty from NASCAR this week and Dale Earnhardt Jr. is prepared to help his crew chief pay it. NASCAR confiscated the rear wing mounts from Earnhardt Jr.'s car on Saturday before the Nextel Cup race at Darlington Raceway. Eury called it an "interpretation." "There's been three different styles of brackets on there and it just happened to be one of those old-style brackets," he said. Eury said the brackets were the same ones that weren't discovered during pre- or post-qualifying inspections.

There's been three different styles of brackets on there and it just happened to be one of those old-style brackets

So how do the brackets affect the wing that makes it perform differently to give the driver an edge over the others?

NASCAR mandates the placement of the screws and on that one bracket they were off by at least 1/4 inch.

NASCAR mandates a wing engle of about 16 degrees. Broadcast reported that the brackets made the wing be at 23 degrees.

Brackets were one of 3 brackets nascar used in test sessions.....they made a mistake by leaving them on there.

The car somehow passed inspection twice before it was noticed.

I personally think the fine is a little high, i'm also not sure i agree with the 6 race suspension since it was an honest mistake.

Nascar is on a mission this year to suspend crew chiefs.

I think the last sentance in the story says it all. They knew they were the wrong ones. They got caught cheating.
"Whatever he needs me to do," Earnhardt said. "I don't really know what he was trying to accomplish there. We still ran all right with the stock positions."

Dale Earnhardt Jr. DEI Penalized

Full Story

Since the beginning of the year, NASCAR has sent a clear signal that any tampering with its new Car of Tomorrow would be seriously penalized.

Tuesday, that message was driven home

The governing body announced their first COT-related penalty on Tuesday, docking Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Dale Earnhardt Inc. 100 points apiece while suspending crew chief Tony Eury Jr. for six weeks and fining him $100,000 for a violation found during pre-race inspection Saturday night at Darlington Raceway.

Prior to rain showers that eventually postponed Saturday night’s Dodge Avenger 500, NASCAR officials found that the rear wing mounts on the No. 8 Chevrolet Impala SS at Darlington were not approved, leading NASCAR to confiscate the components and announce a penalty for the infraction.

What does that drop him to, 14th, 15th or something like that?

According to Robin Pemberton there was nothing "honest" about this rule violation.

But still, ya gotta love it. Eury, Jr. and DEI caught with their pants down around their ankles, an appendage waving in the breeze, and "Junior Nation" and Earnhardt fans running around, circling the wagons while shouting, "it is was a mistake".

Recent comments by NASCAR and failure to offer a plausible explanation by Tony Eury, Jr., or DEI, should be enough to quell a defense of this "honest mistake" by the most fervent "Junior Nation"/DEI, or Earnhardt, fan. Doubtful Dale, Jr., knew what was going on but he is guilty by default. I do not think Dale, Jr., is interested in winning by cheating but that is just my opinion and detractors or fans might have varying opinions.

Just goes to show ya, cheating is alive and well and surprising where found. Why..... who ever woulda thought an Earnhardt Team would cheat ??? Or should it be who ever woulda thought they might get caught ??? ;)

It is certain some will feel the punishment doesn't fit the crime, but NASCAR makes it sound as if they are getting serious and they are sure sending a strong message.t

Now, if only NASCAR would establish a guideline for caution flags..........;)
