The ones I don't understand are you proactive haters and bashers and trashers of auto racing, especially NASCAR as America's most visible form.

Why must you e-mail here, and barge into the ESPN Conversation after any given NASCAR story, to mouth off that NASCAR isn't a sport, that there's no skill involved, and that it's followed only by dumb people?

If you don't like it, why not just ignore it? Why such vitriol? Why are you so angry? Have you considered seeking counseling for this?

What has NASCAR ever done to you?

Have you ever been attacked by a NASCAR fan? Even bothered by a NASCAR fan?

Do they harass you on the streets, preaching to you? Do they ask you for spare change to support their cause? Do they knock on your door and push propaganda tracts on you? Do they want to enter your house and convert you?

I would have loved to have seen the editor's face when this was published. ROTFL

Good read, but it will never reach those who are doing the bashing. This just goes with the territory and won't ever change. While he does talk of hockey in the article, even that is on the edge of those big three sports fans who only pay attention to their dear sports. And why is that? Because those three sports, football, baseball and basketball are the mainstay of sports in the US like it or not. When you look at it from another point, you can see that those three sports have more fans than any other sport. When you add them all up, I'd say that more racing fans are also fans of football, baseball and basketball that the other way around, giving the big three a bigger count. But what I think Ed's article really deals with are those fans who are just so adamantly devoted to their sports that they just don't want to hear about anything that they don't like, i.e. autoracing.

I know that as a fan of racing, it irks me when I read some reporters article on racing that obviously doesn't know much about the sport. I wonder why in the world is this person even doing this. Just like the networks put a known sports reporter as an anchor for the races that has never, or not to my knowledge, done much in the line of racing. It's because they want someone who is recognizable on screen for those who've never watched the sport. I guess that might make sense, but for those of us who have been fans for a long time, it looks rediculous. Few racing reporters have made it big covering any of the big three though some have like Doc Punch etc. But I doubt you would hear the end of it if Fox had put Benny Parsons behind the mike at a baseball game on Saturday. Or Ned Jarrett on a game between the NY Giants and the Redskins. Imagine the horror of those fanatics that watched.

Autoracing has never gotten the respect from the sports community they deserve and probably never will. Even lowly soccer gets more respect AND more coverage nationwide. In the end, we fans will always be compared to total redneck southerners who tote guns and chew tobacco. But then again, what's wrong with that?

It's hard to find people who have more than a casual interest in a number of sports. I belong to 3 or 4 forums, because my football buddies aren't real interested in racing. My F-1 buddies tend to pooh pooh " Tin Tops " as they call them. But you do find a few that follow both....the big problem with the F-1 guys is that they live in a country where they can't watch NASCAR unless they want to pay big bucks for it, or get the Streaming off the internet.
That's why I joined this forum....I want to interact with some people who have a little more than a casual interest in NASCAR, with out getting politics rammed down my throat, or arguing over stupid crap.

But Drew, we do argue over stupid crap all the time. That's part of the fun. :) One thing for sure about this forum is that most of us here are avid NASCAR fans.

on our FSAE racing team, mentioning nascar is a sure way to get shot. Our prof swears that F1 is the best racing, about half the team envies sports car racing, a few like F1, then there's this 3 of us who like nascar.

And boy does it make for thick air sometimes.

Don't forget we have posters on this very board who pooh-pooh everything Nascar. They'll constantly remind us of everything they see as being wrong. From the drivers to the announcers to the coverage. They'll tell us that only drag racing is real racing, and if you must watch oval racing then the only thing to watch is Arca... :D

Oh I enjoy a good argument,,, I may even try to stir one up now and then. But I've been sort of cruising around and watching forums, and you guys seem pretty good. Some of them..... It gets in to name calling and stuff.....that's too much.

They don't have to like NASCAR but they can't pooh pooh the money that it generates, or the popularity. It's second only to the NFL,,,,More popular than MLB,,,,America's sport. Drag racing will never be bigger than baseball.
Why do you think guys like Montoya and Jacques Villeneuve have, or tried to make the switch. They're not stupid.

I can't stand golf, but you'll never see me commenting on golf stories or going to golf message boards to complain about it. If people love it, good for them. I don't stand in the way of their enjoyment.

Exactly. When I go to ESPN or other sports sites which also cover NASCAR among the others, I just click on the NASCAR area. I have no interest in reading about the others, so I don't go.

You'd be surprised at the number of NASCAR fans we have up here in the North. I've had people tell me that think it's great that I've found something I'm so passionate about and enjoy so much, some who aren't racing fans. Then I have my husband's other friend who loves that I'm into now because he hangs out more often with their other friend since they're both single and he's a major snob about NASCAR. Open wheel, sportscars, etc., are fine with him, but he's a snob about NASCAR and this guy loves that he can talk about it with me. Even my brother who is an open-wheel snob still calls me if see there's something on TV I might like and he picks up stickers and things at the track for me. He can't help himself. LOL The funny thing for me now is, I forget that there's so many people who are like I used to be and have no idea who or what I'm talking about and I figure everyone should know. LOL

It's that Smoke's new official number? Looks nice if it is. ;) Speaking of Tony, I'm ticked that the magazine I put up with my groceries didn't manage to make it into the bags. I don't know how she missed it, but at least I didn't get charged for it. Smoke is on the cover with an angel on one side and the devil on the other. I HAD to have it. HAD TO. LOL Now I have to out and get it.

I like it! It will match my 24s on my car better than the orange. I still can't take off my 20 YET. When the season starts, it's gone. I'm a Smoke fan, not a 20 fan.
