I think that it would be the wrong move to go to JGR but what the heck do I know? He really started coming on strong at the end of last season and sure is looking good this year. I think he stays where he's at.

With Greg Biffle now signed to a new three-year contract, Roush Fenway Racing will turn its focus to retaining Sprint Cup points leader Carl Edwards.

Roush Fenway president Steve Newmark said on Sunday he is cautiously optimistic a deal can be reached with Edwards, the biggest free agent on the NASCAR market. He hopes the deal can be reached before mid-summer.

"My hope would be before that," Newmark said from the infield at Talladega Superspeedway, where the team held a news conference announcing Biffle's deal with the team and sponsor 3M. "I'm cautiously optimistic that we'll be able to get something done. I think it's the right fit for Carl, Roush Fenway and for Carl's sponsors."

Edwards recently said negotiations were on the back burner, as he doesn't want to disrupt the best start of his career and what he believes will be a championship run. But Newmark said negotiations are ongoing.

"Carl and I, we have constant dialogue about it," Newmark said. "Clearly our main focus is to have Carl continue to run for the championship, and hopefully we can get [sponsor] Aflac and Carl a championship this year.

"At the same time it's the nature of the business and you have to do a lot of this stuff in parallel."

Edwards is free to talk to other teams. Sources said he has visited with Joe Gibbs Racing, which would have to expand to a fourth team to accomodate such an addition.

But most in the garage believe Edwards will re-sign with Roush Fenway, the team he has driven for since his Sprint Cup career began in 2004. Biffle is among those who are confident that Edwards will remain his teammate.

"As you know, our cars are super fast this season and they will be for the next couple of years," Biffle said. "We're kind of on the upswing with all the things we've got going on with our company."

Newmark said the goal is to maintain continuity, and re-signing Edwards is a big part of that.

"Continuity in this sport, in my mind, is very underrated and it's something we've tried to focus on recently," Newmark said. "So obviously, re-signing Greg and 3M for an extension is the first step in that process."

Biffle, 41, acknowledged he took a cut in salary, considering the current economic climate. But he's "happy where we ended up" and can see ending his racing career with the team.

"There's been a little talk about that," Biffle said. "Let me be clear that this isn't my last contract. We'll see, but that's definitely the plan, I believe, to finish my driving career for Roush Fenway."

Biffle, cut in salary. Man that sucks!

i could see carl going to red bull. they will need to replace kk and carl fits the bill nicely for the type of driver they want. young, daring and a winner.

I can see Edwards at JGR.I think Edwards would do better with JGR.
I think Logano is going to have an interesting time getting his contract renewed. Bread is getting kinda moldy these days.

He's only just moved up to 24th in the standings, only because of the crap shoot we call Talladega.
Unfortunately, we know the first person to get the "axe" will be poor Zippadeli. Maybe Tony will hire him.

The best move that Stewart could make right now, IMO, is to get Zippadeli back on the box.

Might be the best thing for Zippadeli as well.

As for Edwards, he'll most likely stay where he is but he's going to play the field to get the best deal he can - not that he isn't a good bargaining position anyway.

Biffle? I suspect the line didn't form for his employ the way he and his agent suspected it would or wanted Roush to believe it might.

I think Carl should just stay where he's at. I don't think he could fit in at JGR since he and Kyle can't get along. Logano is the one in trouble at JGR right now. Kid hasn't done crap since coming into the Cup series.

Denny and Busch aren't exactly BFF's either. No loveloss there.

Well I think he would only go to JGR or RFR because who else is gonna let him run a full nationwide schedule:rolleyes:

Not to hijack the thread but that would be awesome. Ive been waiting for that since Tony split with JGR. Guess we will hold off and see. I dont see Roush letting his main cash cow leave right now. If you look at it hes the only Roush driver you see competing up front every weekend. Greg has his weeks and so does Matt. David is starting to make some noise as well but you still see Carl atleast once a week.

I agree Carl is the the top dog at RFR, no way that Jack doesn't sign him.

I agree. The guy is having a championship year and his outlook looks very good right where he is now. I don't see where JGR is the move to make unless it's all about the money.

If money is the driving force, I could see Carl doing it, thats why he's in the NNS.
