NASCAR has issued penalties and fines to the #99 team that competes in the Sprint Cup Series, as a result of rule infractions found last Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The #99 car driven by Carl Edwards was found to be in violation of Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment used do not conform to NASCAR rules); and 20-2.1J (any device or duct work that permits air to pass from one area of the interior of the car to another, or to the outside of the car, will not be permitted. This includes, but is not limited to, the inside of the car to the trunk area, or the floors, firewalls, crush panels and wheel wells passing air into or out of the car) of the 2008 NASCAR rule book. The violations were found during post-race inspection at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on March 2. As a result, Edwards and car owner Jack Roush have been penalized 100 championship driver and 100 championship owner points, respectively. In the event the #99 team qualifies for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, the team will not receive the 10 bonus points for the UAW-Dodge 400 victory used for determining the Chase seeding order. Crew chief Bob Osborne has been fined $100,000, suspended from the next six Sprint Cup Series events, suspended from NASCAR until April 30 and placed on probation until Dec. 31.(NASCAR PR), Expect Roush Fenway Racing to appeal the penalties. The 100 pt deduction takes Edwards from leading the Drivers Points Standings to 7th, 79 pts out of 1st and #18-Kyle Busch retakes the points standings by 20 over #12-Ryan Newman.(3-5-2008)

I posted this one because it had a link, the one above did not.

NASCAR has penalized Roush Fenway Racing's Carl Edwards 100 driver points and levied other sanctions as a result of rule infractions found last Sunday after he won the UAW-Dodge 400 Sprint Cup race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

NASCAR has also taken away the 10-point bonus Edwards would receive for the win if he makes this season's Chase For The NASCAR Sprint Cup. Edwards was the Sprint Cup points leader, but now drops to seventh in the standings.

The team was found in violation of the rules because the car's oil tank cover was not attached.

As a result, Edwards and car owner Jack Roush have been penalized 100 championship driver and 100 championship owner points, respectively. In the event the team qualifies for the Chase, it will not receive the 10 bonus points used for determining the Chase seeding order. Crew chief Bob Osborne has been fined $100,000, suspended from the next six NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events, suspended from NASCAR until April 30 and placed on probation until Dec. 31.

NASCAR has had a series of penalties for car of tomorrow infractions, each of which cost the driver 100 points and led to a suspension of the crew chief.

Wow

the 10 bonus points are going to hurt if he indeed makes the chase.

That is as far as you can go without actually taking the win away. I for once applaud NASCAR for this.

The decision seems appropriate to me. Robby's does not.

The jury's in on Robby already?

No, No. I meant Nascar's penalty to Robby was not fair. I am waiting the decision the same as everyone else. It will be a real shame if Nascar loses Robby in the series.

and i assume there's going to be an appeal? and i surprised about taking the 10 bonus points from the chase..

He can appeal all he wants but it won't be rescinded, Nascar is not going to back away from this IMO.

just curious if anyone has heard Roush's side? what was the reason according to them?? Not fussin over the penalty, it was in book and he was wrong, but why would the oil cap be off?? can't think of any advantage from that.... but lots were caught with lose ones couple weeks ago...... just wondering.....

Roush had said that the bolt holding the lid came off, how I dont know. That has got to be the cheapest excuse to give but oh well.

And it does give you an advantage SWP, it gives the car more downforce.

According to Toyota GM, they tested in a wind tunnel at some point and said with the lid off of the oil pan it would add another 170 pounds of down force.

Not only is it a advantage, its also a safety issue. I think the penalty is 100% correct.

I must be car ignorant. Where is the lid to the oil pan?

The box is located right behind the driver. From what they say, the air excapes from underneath, up into the car to create more downforce on the back of the car, which gives you more speed and better cornering.

They said the bolts sheared off. There are 4 bolts. Hard to imagine 4 bolts breaking off.

He should have claimed a "Robbie Gordon" and said that the shop sent him the wrong part.

Elliott Sadler on Carl Edwards

"I honestly think NASCAR's penalty on the No. 99 was not severe enough, to be honest with you," Sadler said this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. "If you're going to deliberately cheat and try to take advantage of something, then you should be penalized or sit out a race or something like that."

"I think it insults my intelligence as a racecar driver when you try to tell me that you accidentally left the oil tank lid off," Sadler said. "If you go to any owner, any engineer, any driver, any crew chief, and ask them, 'Is that an advantage?' Heck, yes, it's an advantage. I've done it half of my career. Everybody did it until NASCAR started teching it. You do that, it's 100 pounds of downforce.

"We spend three or four million dollars a year going to the wind tunnel, trying to change body shapes, trying to change underneath the car, changing crush panels, doing stuff like that all the time, trying to get a gain, trying to find an advantage. When all you have to do is take the oil tank lid and get 100 pounds of downforce."
