Elliott Withdraws From Driver Poll

At a press conference Wednesday, Bill Elliott announced that he is removing his name from the ballot for the 2003 season. Fans have voted Elliott the Most Popular Driver more times than any other driver. Last year, he edged out Dale Earnhardt Jr. to mark his 16th victory.

"I want to announce formally that I'm gracefully retiring my name from most popular driver," said Elliott. "The fans have been fantastic, but I feel like I've been in the spotlight enough, and it's time for me to step back and see what's going on around me. I kind of wanted to do it last year, but things didn't work out. Being the way things turned around, the fans have been great. I don't know if I could ever repay those folks for the dedication they've given me. I'm going to sit back and see what the new names come up to be."

WOW! I guess the people in Dawsonville are pretty bummed. :P Nothing to do now with their extra time. :D
 
He won it last year on the strength of protest votes...people NOT wanting Junior to get it.
 
I don't think he likes the spotlight of it all, and being named most popular driver for the billionth time might bug him a little. I'm sure he really appreciates it, I just bet he gets embarassed by it some.....
 
Bill is a class act. Unfotunately, unless there is a big swing in the votes, E Jr. will win and I don't think that carries the same weight being many Jr. fans were fans of his father.
 
So do you think any son of a racer should not win it? Just because Jr.'s dad was Big E that means he shouldn't win? I think Jr. has alot of fans of his own and if he wins his fans voted it that way. Seems no one wants him to win anything in racing---not a race or most popular driver. Guess it all stems from people thinking he's not earned it. Well if you get the votes you earn the MPD award in my mind.

That just goes to show the quality of his character.

I agree with racerx11. We can still use our write in votes to vote him in! hehe.

yea thats how bill won, his fans voted ever day, while most of use vote once. Its stupid :P
