Final test scheduled for roof exit option

RICHMOND, Va. – NASCAR expects to conduct a final test this week in preparation for allowing teams the option of installing a roof exit in cars.
Winston Cup driver Michael Waltrip will participate in a test at Daytona International Speedway with the roof exit installed to determine if any aerodynamic issues exist with the new hatch, said Gary Nelson, director of NASCAR’s research and development center in Concord, N.C.

When the roof exit is finalized, teams will be allowed the option of installing it, but it will not be required, Nelson said.

"If that test goes well, I already have the (technical) bulletin so the guys can use it," Nelson said.

My Personal Answer is i think this wont work becuase the drivers has to take the hans and hutchens device off still. before getting out of the car

I like the idea of Michael doing the testing. He's one of the biggest drivers and it should be a fair test of his ability to get out.

I think the idea of the hatch is to make it possible to come straight up out of the seat, negating the necessity to remove the hans, or of it's getting caught on the netting or other items.

Soooo are they like going to put Rudd on the track to punt Mikey into a spin and pin the car against the wall to see if it works???? :D

What is up with Mike Mulhurn?

I do not think I have ever seen a driver in an emergency "bail out" situation bother to remove the head and neck restraint.

Generally they come out with the helmet still on, the head and neck device still on, and in most cases still wired to the radio. Remember Bobby falling down when he yanked the mike wire loose? Same with Ryan. Same with both Kenny Wallace and, who was it, Bodine?

The roof hatch gives the driver and perhaps more importantly the safety crews, an option for either getting out or getting to the driver to render aid.

But there should be more testing than we have heard about. Still have concerns about how this hatch will react in all the different crash and spin scenarios that may come up.

I think the key phrase here is "to determine if any aerodynamic issues exist with the new hatch".

It not be a good thing to have on open unexpectedly.

I dunno. Just a goofy lookin pic I guess. I despise the guy actually. He's not good enough to get a job at the National Enquier IMO.

The test will not be valid until Jimmy Spencer test's it! :p Anybody know the dimensions of the hatch?
