ESPN's Michigan coverage... THIS is bizzare

What bar were they sitting at when they came up with this idea? Maybe they got in to Mayfield's stash.

ESPN’s live coverage of the Aug. 15 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Michigan International Speedway will have a new and different approach as the telecast will prominently feature five former NASCAR champions and will be done without a traditional “play by play” announcer.

“Our goal is to give viewers a different presentation, one filled with discussion, observations, and stories from some of the most respected champions NASCAR has crowned, and their unique unfiltered perspective on an event,” said Rich Feinberg, ESPN vice president, motorsports.

“This is an opportunity for our viewers to have the experience of sitting around watching a race with these champions from their couch at home, and without the traditional approach to sportscasting.“

More and more

Announcing and less and less racing. That is what I get out of this. The screen will be full of retired racers all the while the race goes on.. Well it is Indie, maybe that is best.
Betsy

Well, Michigan can be a ZZZzzzzzzz.

Maybe 5 champions will have better stories than PxP. At least this experiment is being tried on a N'wide race. Those are usually filled with
Cuppers than run over everyone else. So why not try something different.

Didn't they do something like this at a football game one time --- long ago? No PxP, just showed the game.

I used to be able to listen to the race on MRN radio and watch tv with the sound off. That was decent coverage. Station changed their format and no more MRN.

Seems like the networks now gear the programing to new viewers, explaining in detail how a piece of tape yada, yada, yada heard it a hundred times,,,,

I dunno, sounds interesting. Mind you it won't work if they have the cameras on those five champs, but let them interact with each other during the race as to what is going on. Reminds me of any sports talk show with only one person behind the mike. They can blab on and on and it is either controversial or boring or both. But add a second, third and fourth person and things get lively. The same can be said here. Now we have to learn how the five former champs are. My guess would be they aren't necessarily Cup champs, but rather Nationwide champs. I think I might like this idea.
