you've got to read this article by Marty Smith ---

http://espn.go.com/racing/nascar/cup/story/_/id/9999795/nascar-greatness-jimmie-johnson

An excerpt ----

He grew up humble. The first eight years of his life were spent in Los Coches Mobile Estates, a trailer park in East County, Calif. His parents were awesome. They worked hard and never sweated the small stuff. They loaded up the boys -- Jimmie, Jarit and Jessie -- and rolled out to the desert to ride dirt bikes and eat burritos and laugh from the gut.

Yes, another good article by Smith. Still does nothing to make me like the guy though. Simply not a fan. Some drivers I just don't like. Some are champions, some aren't.

It say's all of the things I've seen and heard about him for years, good read.

Good stuff.

Though as a journalism major it's obvious this guy never took many English courses. His sentences are short & choppy - that being a cardinal sin in writing.

Good article, it covers things we don't normally hear about a driver. I wasn't a fan of Jimmie when he started to do better than one of my favorites Jeff Gordon. But he won my respect through his driving and championships. Now I'm more of a fan. He represents the sport very well.

Regardless of who they are I always admire an individual who came from a humble upbringing and when their hard work and their achievements (not a silver spoon and a pile of daddys or granddaddy's money) got them to the upper level of where they are in their chosen field. All this without showing new found arrogance or an accelerated ego.

Not a fan of JJ but glad he won the cup instead of Kenseth :D
Thankfully Brad is no longer the champ, JJ does a much better and quieter job IMO

He drives a Chevrolet, I expected as much.

Good article. Marty Smith is one of my favorite NASCAR writers.

This jus confirms he is the Anti-Christ.:)

Short and simple. If you write a 17 page article and your sentence are 54 words long, nobody's going to read it.

funny you get a sense that this 6th title is different everyone is finally seeing jimmie and giving credit, goodness sakes 5 titles wasn't enough to do it. but 6 has, imagine how opinions will change at 7 or 8. marty smith is my favorite nascar reporter

Most people with any intelligence has been giving him credit for awhile now. I know most in my circle of NASCAR friends was giving him his credit after the 3rd and 4th championship. Like most, I respect him as a driver, and can admit he is already one of the best ever, but it still puts a smile on my face when he screws up.
