LINCOLNTON, N.C. — NASCAR team owner Ray Evernham says he is negotiating to buy a small track in North Carolina so he can "get back into grassroots racing."

The Lincoln Times-News reports that Evernham said Thursday that he and partner Bob Mack plan to buy the East Lincoln Speedway. Evernham said he has sold most of his interest in the Gillett-Evernham Motorsports racing team, and plans to retire from the highest level of the sport.

The 51-year-old Evernham was a championship-winning crew chief who won three NASCAR titles with Jeff Gordon.

Evernham small speedways that play an important role in developing future racing stars are disappearing nationwide. The East Lincoln Speedway has been in operation since 1991, and Evernham said the dirt track had a family atmosphere that he wanted to preserve.

Yahoo.. dirt track racing! Nothing like dirt in your teeth, eyes, up your nose, after a race. ;)

Well.............geeeeeeeeeee!!! I, for one will miss Ray in Cup racing. He's a nice guy and I like him. Wish him the best in whatever endeavor.

Often wondered how Dodge got him away from Hendrick, 47 wins and 3 championships in 6 years with Gordon. And he walked? Sure would have liked to been a fly on the wall for that converstion!

Go go from champ cc to selling off most of your team in 6 years has to sting.
Wish him well.

Could be with the economics of the sport these days, Ray decided it was time to get out. Start enjoying life a little more, not worrying about if he will have a sponsor for the next 10 races, or if his manufacturer will pull out all together. More power to him, i always liked the guy, wish him well, and I have a feeling you will see him on TV a little more.

Ray could be thinking if he bought a track, maybe Erin could win there.
