No injuries in explosion at Gibbs Racing.

An explosion early Friday rocked the headquarters of Joe Gibbs Racing, causing significant damage to JGR's engine department. There were no injuries reported.

According to a team spokesperson, around 9 a.m. members of the engine department were running a routine test on one of the Gibbs team's two engine dynamometers. Dynamometers are machines used to run an engine through its paces to measure power and performance under the strain of race conditions.

A source within Gibbs' team says that it was during this test session that one of the engines exploded, resulting in a fire that significantly damaged the dynamometer on which is was mounted and caused at least some damage to a second dynamometer located in an adjacent room.

The JGR spokesperson confirmed that the fire was short-lived and was contained within the two-room area of the engine dyno department, which is part of the team's 235,000-square-foot facility. The main shop floor and second-floor offices continued business as usual shortly after the initial fire alarm sounded.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear.

Roughly an hour after the explosion, team members received clearance from firefighters to re-enter the shop to assess the damage. The JGR spokesperson described most of the damage as being caused by smoke and water from the brief firefighting effort.

The engine that exploded was not in the team's plans for Daytona Speedweeks, which begin next Friday, but the engine mounted on the second damaged dynamometer was. The initial concern for the second engine wasn't fire damage, but rather water damage.

Maybe they should have put a shim on it before running the test? :D

Glad to hear that nobody was hurt. Enough of an explosion to do damage to the dyno in the next room! Holy cow!

I heard it wasn't really an engine Kyle just got angry:D

N2O?

Or maybe the guys in the dyno shop built a better meth pipe. :D

thats what my dad said...nitrous is the only that explodes violently enough to go through a wall into a second dyno room. This isn't top fuel, dropping a valve or breaking a lifter doesn't warrant a fiery explosion, unless they had unsafe fluids stored int he dyno room. The closest i could think, is that it somehow backfired through the carburetor and they had a loose fuel line or something- but that's a fire that can be easily put out, not an explosion...

Hot oil burns, a rod blows a hole in the block or pan and the pieces go flying everywhere. DAMHIKT;)

I think they should have used the term "she done blow'd up" rather than exploded.

except it caused a fire, and damaged the dyno in the next rom over..which I assume means there was a cinder block wall between the two rooms......not much can blow a hole through cinder blocks....

Some of the dirt latemodel teams are soaking their air filters in nitro methane before qualifying.....maybe JGR guys were giving it a shot and went terribly wrong lol.

I know one thing, if I am driving for JGR this makes me a little nervous for the season!

I have to ask, how?? The Gov't made a huge deal over policing the CH3N2 containers bc they're so explosive...how are the local guys getting it?

Im not sure to be honest with you, never thought to ask. But there is an engine builder thats big in the DLM world that recommends it to his customers and does it himself. I just dont know where they are getting it. Local guy at my track has a motor from this guy and has done it a few times.

govt would have a field day with that.Or whoever cracked down on the storage and transportation. basically, nitromethane can only leave the drum in small quanities, like2 or 3 gallons at a time, and they have to be stored in specific places with fire premits ect.

maybe the policing is as effective as the war on drugs? try the guy wearing dark glasses three bays down;)

CH3NO2 freezes at -20° F. Dry ice (-109.3° F) and a Styrofoam cooler will keep it frozen in the filter until you are ready to use it. This is why the gauze media air filters are outlawed at some tracks. Look for the guy who installs a new filter element just before he goes out to qualify. Every rocket scientist worth his hydrazine knows this.

Yeah they will usually run a oil filter for qualifying and a paper one for the racing. The oil filter usually has the stuff in it.
