The final two rounds of the FIA Formula 3000 International Championship will feature mandatory pitstops as a prelude to their full-time introduction to the series in 2004.

All teams have approved the move, which is aimed at spicing up the action in the one-make single-seater series. It will be tried for the first time at the next round of the championship at Hungary next weekend.

"This idea was put forward by the FIA's Charlie Whiting," Arden team boss Christian Horner told Motorsport News. "I contacted the teams, who were unanimous. It should spice up the races and teach drivers about pushing on their in- and out-laps. It will instill a good discipline about adhering to the speed limit. It is something they will use if they progress on from F3000."

Teams will be a bigger part of the equation

Six pit crew will be able to work on the car during the stops, including two jack men.

Den Bla Avis team manager Paul Jackson said: "Teams will be a bigger part of the equation and it means races could be won or lost with the use of strategy."

This is a good thing for F3000, its just what the series needs. This years championship has been rather dull to say the least and has needed some changes made to spice up the action, and the series reputation, this is just the first of a long line of things to come. The series should be re-named Formula 2 for the 2004, or more likely the 2005 season. The series was known as Formula 2 prior to 1985 when F3000 was introduced. The main reason for the name coming back is because with more and more series appearing at the moment its harder for the average viewing to know where F3000 fits in. With the name Formula 2 there is much less room for confusion.

There are other new changes in the pipline which I know about and I am afraid cannot disclose, the information I have given here has already been released in the recent past so therefore Im not giving away any secrets! :p

And those pitstops were quite intersting. Nobody knew what they were doing! I slept through half of the race, but those Redbull guys blew their race almost with pitstops. I think it was Luzzi or something that had a really long stop. Their pitstops look like the decade show pitstops, guys in short shorts, takes 5 seconds to take a wheel nut off... It was great.

Hey Saleen, you said you work for Arden or something? Could we have seen you messing up one of their pitstops or do you not touch the car?
