Is anybody out there from the Greenville-Spartanburg area or familiar with the area? I have a chance to apply for a job in Greer and am just wondering about how the area is to live in. Crime, taxes, realestate ect.

I have been through there before about a year and a half ago but only stopped long enough to buy film at Wal-Mart. I absolutely loved the Charlotte area but was only there for 5 days so you can't really judge a place by that.

Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I live about 12 miles east of Greenville. Moved here from Memphis, TN about 1990. Listen to the locals and you would think crime is high, but compared to Memphis it's nothing. I would say that crime and taxes are about equal to any city of the same size, don't let it detour you. Realestate like everywhere else is going up. But on a positive note if you drive about 10 minutes out of town your in the country.

10 minutes West of Greer and your in the foothills of the Smokies and it's beautiful. Greer is between Spartanburg and Greenville, so you can find just about anything you need.

Lots of Area racing. NASCARs second oldest secantioned track is Greenville-Pickens, 1/2 Mile asphalt. Anderson Speedway, Just south of Greenville is a 3/8 mile asphalt track. Riverside Speedway in Traverlers Rest, West of Greenvile-Spartanburg, is a 3/8 clay track. Laurens speedway, East of Greenville, also a 3/8 mile clay track. North of Spartanburg is Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, one of the souths fastest 1/2 mile clay speedway.

This area is within a couple of hours drive to several NASCAR tracks, Atlanta, Darlington, Charlotte, Rockingham and Bristol.

If you have a job available in Greer I would assume it's with BMW or one of thier suppliers. Thats the biggest growing business around here. If it has to do with the textile industrie be cautious, more and more are closing every day.

Here's something you will enjoy. It only snows here maybe once or twice a year and the locals panic. They willl buy up all the Milk and Bread to be found if any snow is in the forcast and close down just about everything when it does snow. A word of caution, if it does snow be careful on the roads, they don't know how to drive when the roads are slick. Come to think of it they don't drive good anytime. Car Insurance is fairly high.

Come on down, it's good to have another Brown truck fan in the area. DJ is my main man.

Speaking of closing down for snow, while we are here about an hour or so north of you, they will close down the schools just at the mention of snow. :cookoo:

Sounds like the Dallas/Ft.Worth area when snow is even mentioned...lol:rolleyes:

Hey #84 thanks a heep for the information! I am a Federal Employee with the National Weather Service. The job isn't a done deal yet. I have to bid on it and be selected. I just wanted some information on the area before I put in for the job. The crime would probably be the biggest shock since we virtually have none here. The cold seems to keep out the riff-raff.:D

You all have more tracks in that area than we have in the whole state. I started racing Legend cars up here this summer and just bought one a couple of weeks ago.

I really liked the area when we went through there on our way to Atlanta from Charlotte. Beautiful country!! And I like the idea of still being in an area that snows sometimes and is not far from skiing. I lived in FL and OK a couple of years each and Christmas was tough. Hard to get into the spirit w/o snow.

This decision to move to SC would be easy if it was not for having family here in the Dakotas. We're very close and would be hard to leave them again.

Thanks again for the info and go DJ!!!!

JarrettFan, I was born & raised in Greenville but I moved away 11 yrs ago so I can't tell you anything about the cost of living there. I'm currently job hunting down there now. I'm ready to move back home. I can tell you that it wouldn't be a very far drive in the winter if you want to go skiing. Like #84 said, you'd be in the foothills of the smokies. Might have to drive 45 min to go skiing. Yes, there's TONS of racing going on there too. Greer has an 1/8 of a mile drag strip if you like drag racing. A lil small but still alot of fun. If it makes you feel anymore comfortable, my best friend just married a guy from North Dakota. His family is there and he's close to his family but he LOVES it in Greenvile. He says he'll never leave Greenville.

As for the snow.... unknown I lived in Arlington for 8 yrs and now I'm in Pa. People up here in Pa act just like the people in sc & tx when it comes to snow. They called for 2 to 4 inches tonight. When I drove past the grocery store the parking lot was full. They actually have the equipment to clear the roads within hours of snow fall yet the people up here act as if they're in south....

JarrettFan, one more thing... I don't know if you federal guys correspond with the people at the weather channel but Mike Slidell on the weather channel lived in Greenville for yrs. He was the weatherman on the local NBC station. If you know him he could give you the scoop too. ;)

Thanks for the reply PenskeGirl. That's some great info. I knew skiing was close by but did not realize it was only 45 minutes away. Too cool. Could still get away in the winter and see snow. And the racin!!!! For longer that 3 months out of the year.

You know, I have been asking around in different places and I have yet to hear anything bad about Greenville. It really sounds like a very nice place to live (as I figured).

Well, I thinkI have decided to bid on it and see what happens. My folks are retired and could come down when ever they wanted. They could even winter there.

Thanks to all who replied. Much appreciated.
