PLEASE NOTE: Just like in real NASCAR, you keep on playing the rest of the season whether you are in the Chase or not! You still impact the game with your participation!!
The 2016 Fantasy NASCAR Predictor Cup season from the very beginning was destined to be one filled with anticipation throughout the year. When the green flag flew for the Daytona 500, 43 people were following not only their favorite driver, but also their picks in this fantasy league. And with only 1 race to go before the Chase, I am very proud to say that an astounding 33 of those 43 are still active, 37 total are active heading into Richmond.
Only 6 of the 16 Chase spots are clinched. For some, just participating this week should lock them into the Chase. While others control their own destiny. Either they have to out-perform another competitor or end all worries and be the one to take the checkered flag. There are many stories throughout the field to keep track of. Just because there are currently 16 "winners" for 16 spots, does not mean all is safe and sound for those above that cut-line. Let's go through some of the stories:
Petr Smetana (#43), Smokegirl14 (#14), David (#97), Jakub Smetana (#42), Kitkat8 (#8), and Mile501 (#21) already know that they will be in the Chase. Now the only thing they have to worry about is who will join them at Chicago.
Petr Smetana (#43) got his 2 wins in the first 5 races of the season. But he's been no slouch ever since. He's 2nd in average finish, 2nd most Top-5's, 2nd most Top-10's, and is tied for 2nd most Top-20 finishes. His worst finish in the last 4 races was 4th. This guy will be hard to stop in the Chase. He's been strong all year and he's only now hitting his prime, it seems.
Smokegirl14 (#14) is coming off of a huge win at Darlington that made her one of only 4 competitors with multiple wins. She is also one of 3 that won multiple races in a 5 race span with her other win being 5 races prior at Pocono. 2015 stats don't carry over. But who can forget how she was able to win 2 of the 3 races of Round 2 in one of the biggest Chase stories we had last year. Could she be a similar threat this year? Her league-leading 8 Top-5 finishes says she very well could be.
David (#97) won at Richmond and then later at the Coke Zero 400. Since then, the 2nd half of his season has been mediocre at best. In between his 2 wins, he finished outside of the Top-20 only twice. Since his win at Daytona, he's finished in the Top-20 only three times. All 3 times, however, came in the last 4 races. He may be on a bit of an upswing as we head towards the Chase.
@DanicaFreak (#7) is the only competitor with multiple wins that has not yet clinched a spot in the Chase. That is because Mik Maqracer83 (#29), who sits 31st in points, has a mathematical chance of passing @DanicaFreak in points. All @DanicaFreak has to do is score 10 points at Richmond to ensure he stays ahead even if Mik Maqracer83 pulls off the seemingly impossible perfect Top-10 prediction. I say seemingly, because as we all saw a few weeks ago, a score in the 40's is even possible in the Sprint Cup Series. With a lot of luck, that could be turned into the perfect 50.
Jakub Smetana (#42) leads in every single category except 2; Top-5's and wins. He only has 4 Top-5 finishes which is tied for 8th. And he technically has 0 wins. But because of the new Dash4Champs format, he finished 4th at Sonoma which qualified him for the bonus at Daytona the following week. He won the 5 point bonus there with a 7th place finish, and then sealed the deal with a 3rd place finish at Indianapolis winning another 5 points and clinching a spot in the Chase. With an average finish of 13.28 and an incredible 20 Top-20 finishes in 25 races, Jakub Smetana isn't letting the lack of a win hurt his intimidating stats going into Chicago. Even without the Dash4Champs format, he would be in the Chase as the overall point leader. One point ahead of Petr Smetana (#43).
Kitkat8 (#8) was another one of the major Chase stories of 2015. She performed at the bottom of the field of 20 people each and every week and got only 2 Top-5 finishes in the regular season, one of them being a win that put her in the Chase. But the true underdog of the Chase made herself known very quickly. She won Talladega and made it to Homestead by points only losing the championship by one single point to Kevin20fan (#20). But as things stand right now, Kevin20fan isn't in the Chase. Kitkat8 has already clinched, and she is coming with a little vengeance to get a title she was so close to getting one year ago.
Mile501 (#21) had been flirting with the point cut-off for the Chase all throughout the season. So naturally he was very relieved to be kissing the bricks at Indy and now already being clinched heading into Richmond. He is one of only 8 competitors that has finished outside of the Top-20 10 or fewer times. His best finish in the last 10 races, besides his Indy win, was 11th. If he wants to compete with the Smetana's and Smokegirl14, he's going to want to see a few more tally marks in that Top-10 column.
MJM (#84) is the highest in points that has not yet clinched his spot in the Chase. His win at Sonoma was his 5th Top-10 of the season. He's only had 2 since. If he is to go on to the Chase, he will want to pick up the kind of pace he started the year with. Luckily for him, he won't have to worry so much about Richmond. A mere 5 points is all he needs to officially clinch his spot in the Chase.
Numbah10hatah (#38) has been having what you could call a rather average, yet decent, season. 12 Top-20 finishes, 6 Top-10's, 3 Top-5's, and a win at Michigan. 3 of his 6 Top-10's have come in the last 6 races. But the other 3 races ended up outside the Top-20. He needs 14 points to officially clinch, but I think he may be more concerned with consistency than his clinching scenario as he sits comfortably 36 points ahead of the final Chase spot.
Oldschoolracing519 (#18) made a mockery of the records for highest score in a race and largest margin of victory. 40 points total and a 19 point margin over 2nd place at Michigan. It is that kind of a day that is the reason why I still mention these clinching scenarios, because you never know what kind of a day someone could have. And this late in the going, another day like Oldschoolracing519's could not only ruin someone's day, but possibly their title hopes. Oldschoolracing519 needs only 17 points to clinch in the Chase grid.
@Conner (#98) is in the Chase all because of his hot summer months. 4 of his 5 Top-5 finishes all came in between June-August including his win at Pocono. In fact, the only Top-10 of his that did not come in those months was way back at Fontana. Can he continue his stride into fall season as well? Or will he be known for the summer swing just like Tony Stewart used to be? Either way, 23 points clinches the Chase for him!
Joey2448 (#6) is one of the long time veterans of the league, and that's why it pained me to see that he wasn't running in the All-Star race earlier in the season. He knew it would be much harder this year to get in the Chase by points like he did in 2015. But after his win at Kentucky, he does not need to worry about that! 24 points is all he needs to be officially one of the 16 Chasers going into Chicago. Don't be surprised if he sneaks into a round or two on points. He may just be the Ryan Newman of the league.
Slicedbread96 (#96) unfortunately has the worst average finish (22.32) among the 16 players currently sitting in the Chase. But don't count her out by that just yet. We said the same thing about Kitkat8 (#8) and 883110fan (#10) in 2015 and 883110fan won Chicago and Kitkat8 was one point away from being champion. Slicedbread96 needs 31 points to clinch the Chase. But she may be able to just slide on through after her runner-up finish at Darlington.
Showtime (#44), like Jakub Smetana (#42), technically has no wins but got in through the Dash4Champs program. He may have missed several races, but his stats still line up evenly with those who haven't. His 16.59 average finish ranks 5th among active players, making him an underrated threat in the Chase. His clutch plays by finishing 3rd in Vegas, 5th in Richmond, and 13th at Sonoma allowed him to win the 2 Dash4Champs bonuses and the Chase berth. 31 is his magic number to clinch the Chase.
And now the center of attention as we head to Richmond. Nascarnana (#60) and Nascarman (#81). Both are tied at 347 points. Both sit at the very bottom of the Top-30 in points. They have a 26 point gap over Mik Maqracer83 (#29), another winner waiting for the chance to jump ahead of at least one of these two. A repeat winner would make the battle between these two meaningless. But, should we have a new winner, it is very likely that it will be one of these two that will be left out in the Chase.
Will we see a brand new winner this week at Richmond emotionally squeezing into the Chase at the last possible moment? Will we see heartbreak for a competitor who was so ready to make a run for the Championship beginning at Chicago only to fall short from even making it in? Who will triumph through the intensity? Who will falter under pressure? We will all find out this weekend as we near the climax of a thrilling season.
The excitement of the regular season comes to an end, but the fun really begins here with the Chase. Whether you are in or out, your participation makes a major difference in the outcome of this championship.
Live updates during the race on Saturday night will look very differently than what they have been. When a live update comes, you will see the running order as the race is going on, but you will also get to see how the Chase Grid (1-20) looks as they run!
The Xfinity Series race will also be the final Dash4Champs race. David (#97), Captain51 (#51), Jakub Smetana (#42), and Petr Smetana (#43) are all going for the 5 point bonus. David is the only one of the four who has won the bonus before this season, but since he already has multiple wins in the Xfinity series, he does not need the Chase bonus.
