It is that time once again to eliminate some players in the Chase. This time, we have 2 elimination races, and all are at Talladega. This weekend, the fantasy players in the Chase will feel the same pressure as the NASCAR drivers as they try to avoid disaster and stay alive in this championship format.
Before we get into that, I have the pleasure to announce and congratulate MJM (#84) as one of the 4 Chasers that will be racing for the 2016 Xfinity Series Championship at Homestead, after he won at Kansas this past weekend.
As far as the NASCAR drivers are concerned, Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick can rest easily, while William Byron can relax in the Truck Series. For our fantasy players, it's not that simple. Only Mile501 (#21) is locked into the Round of 8 in the Cup series and will not have to worry about elimination, as long as he posts predictions. Showtime (#44) must make it in by points as he was absent for the Charlotte race. The other 10 Chasers are looking to seal their spot into the next round with a win at 'Dega, or pray that they have scored enough points to advance. Numbah10hatah (#38) is the best of the Chasers by points, excluding the safe Mile501, and he sits 12 points above the cut line. Everyone else is within 6 points of the cut line whether they are above or below it.
Jakub Smetana (#42) has been one of the strongest players of the year, leading the league in overall points. He didn't get his first win until Dover just a few weeks ago. He enters Talladega 1 point out of the Round of 8. He'll need to bring back his consistency. He had an 8.67 average finish in the first round. In this round, his average finish is 16th.
Joey2448 (#6) is 3 points behind 12th place David (#97), and his performance has dropped in between rounds even more than Jakub Smetana. An average finish of 7.0 vs. an average finish of 18.0 showcases a tale of two rounds for this year's Kentucky winner. But it's Talladega, and 3 points can be made up by one lucky name in the right spot in the Top-10.
Kitkat8 (#8), known for her memorable Chase surge in 2015, will need to find that late season power once more if she wants to move on. 17.0 average finish in Round 1 and a 19.0 finish so far in Round 2. But with all that said, like Joey2448, she is just 3 points away from being right back in the mix with the Round of 8.
Oldschoolracing519 (#18) will need a little bit more than the others currently sitting out, but not by much. The Michigan winner is just 6 points shy of moving on at this point. But surely, it is never comforting to have your Chase life fall in the hands of Talladega.
So while we look to decide who will be in the Cup Round of 8, we look to close out the Truck Round of 8. On Saturday, only 2 will be eliminated. Odds for the Chasers sound a little better there, don't they? Think again. No one in the Truck series enters Talladega safe with a win. Non-Chaser @24over48 (#24) spoiled the party not once, but twice winning both Loudon and Las Vegas races, looking for a spoiler sweep in this round.
Jakub Smetana (#42) doesn't need an outstanding performance to ensure his advancement into the Round of 6, but he will need an average day at the very least as he holds a 17 point margin above the cut line.
The two players that sit below that line should not be too worried. Well, of course, that's hard to say at a place like Talladega. But Numbah10hatah (#38) and Braindead Zombie (#88) are just 1 and 2 points behind 6th place Kevin20fan (#20), respectively.
Who will survive Talladega and move on? Who's championship hopes will fall? If the NASCAR Chases don't have you at the edge of your seat this weekend, these fantasy Chases should do the job!
