Hi all, Hope this enquiry makes sense to all of you.
Being only new to the world of Nascar, I have been searching for fastest speeds.
On NASCAR records, of each track, they note fastest laps, which is an average of the lap, so tha actual speed of the car on a straight will be faster than the listed. Is there info avalible on the actual car speeds.
Any info will be read with great interest.

I really doubt it, geoff. Straight-away speeds are not that important. Qualifying is based on the average around the whole track. No need to record speeds at the ends of the straights.
I do know that some unrestricted tests at Talladega showed close to 215 at the end of the front straight. But that was without a plate.

Welcome to our little corner of the cyber world. :)

Rusty hit 228 at the end of a Talladega straightaway, with an average speed of 221 for the lap in 2004 without a plate.

Welcome to the forum Geoff , I 'm sure one of our gurus will have your answer . Great question though. We use a site called Jayski .com to look up a lot of stuff.

Watching the tracker during qualifying is probably the best way to see top speed. I think they were hitting 220 at Michigan in June.

Thanks all for the replies. Yes , foung jayski, and alson listen each week to Final lap.
Just for interest, approximatly, what outright speed would Richard Petty put down say, at Talli or Daytona in 1967.

The first link will not answer your questions but it is about the speed capabilities of the 1970 charger driven by Bobby Isaac, 217 mph at the flats.

As for Petty's straightaway speed at Daytona in 1967, I am guessing 190 mph plus. Curtis Turner won the pole at 180.6 mph. But you could not run wide open or full acceleration for the entire lap then. The best cars and the tires were not that good. Maybe a Drafting pair could reach 195 to 200 mph on straightaways.

Talladega was built in 1969 and also improved at least a generation with the Aero advancements imo.

Bobby Isaac won the pole at 196.386 mph. It is almost certain that he could hit over 200 mph down the straights.
I am less sure of Petty's speed. There was a boycott and his stats are not listed.
Note: Petty also drove a Ford for the biggest part of 1969.
But I do think the Dodge Daytona, and Plymouth
Super bird was available for the 1969 race, or the same body style that Isaac used for the records at the Salt Flats.
