Fatback's....

Just released from Yates effective immediately to pursue other opportunities.

Can't imagine "other opportunities" to mean anything other than Gibbs, but who knows?;)

Who's going to chief the 28 crew for the rest of this season?

Current car chief Ray Fox III will take over for the time being.

No word on what is store after that. Some may recall an older dude by the name of Ray Fox, hope this kid jumped in the right end of the gene pool!:)

If he is going to the 18, and it looks like he is, I wonder if he'll start immediately?

Kinda sounds like it. Or at least he'll probably play a significant role in team operations for the rest of the year as a transition.

I figured that was coming. I'm sure Yates wants to get another crew chief to work with the team, before this whole team is thrown together for next year with Elliot.

i think it would be smart for gibbs to let fatback start immediatley, sure there is only 3 races left but, at least it starts getting the driver crew chief communication handled

This just in from That's Racin'!

Gibbs team hires McSwain shortly after his release by Yates

Michael "Fatback" McSwain, crew chief for Winston Cup driver Ricky Rudd since 1999, was released from the Robert Yates Racing's No. 28 team on Wednesday and a short time later was hired by Joe Gibbs Racing.
McSwain had met recently with officials of the Gibs team about the crew chief opening with driver Bobby Labonte. He is expected to take over in that role at the beginning of next season, but started working for the Gibbs operation as of Wednesday. McSwain declined to comment on the matter last weekend at Atlanta and was unavailable Wednesday afternoon.

"We've negotiated a release for Michael from his contract," said team owner Robert Yates. "This will allow him to pursue other opportunities and allow us to look at our options for the future. We wish him the best in his future endeavors."

Rudd is moving to the Wood Brothers' No. 21 Ford next season and McSwain was expected to remain with the No. 28 and new driver Elliott Sadler.

Yates said Raymond Fox III, 31, would take over as crew chief for the No. 28 this weekend at Rockingham, N.C.

"We look forward to going to Rockingham and I know Raymond will do a good job for us this weekend," Yates said.

Jimmy Makar, Labonte's crew chief, is moving into a management position with Joe Gibbs Racing, which has been interviewing candidates for the crew chief's job on the 18 team.
