Fathers and Sons.........

In another universe saw a thread on fathers and sons racing together or each other, depending on how ya want to look at it. Stemmed from the Jason and Dale run which might happen come Sunday I guess. Anyways decided to research the deal just a bit.

As a side note only once has a father raced with two sons. Back in 1960 Lee raced in Birmingham agains both Richard and Maurice. Richard came out ahead finishing second (to another father named Ned), followed by Lee in third and then Maurice in eighth.

The most notable father-son rivalries (for lack of a better term) are probably four combinations. The Petty clan has two of them. There may be others but they eluded me at the moment...........

Lee Petty and Richard Petty....

Ran against each other in 76 races btween 1958 and 1964. The old man pretty much kicked Richard's butt. 52 times out of those 76 Lee finished ahead of Richard, better than 2:1. Lee won 16 of those races outright while Richard garnered 5 checkers, better than 3:1 in favor of the old man. Top fives had Lee ahead 45 to 25 and top tens had him ahead 61 to 43. Lee's average finish in those races was 7.6 while Richard could only manage a spot four back at 11.6.

Buck and Buddy Baker.....

A bit closer but again old and treachery overcomes. These two ran in 187 races together between and 1976, and Buck came out on top 102 times to Buddy's 85. Buck won 3 races and Buddy got 1 of them. Byck had 37 top fives and 74 top tens while Buddy was picking up 32 top fives and 55 top tens. The average was pretty close with Buck averageing a finish of 15.8 while Buddy was averaging a 16.9.

Richard and Kyle Petty....

Speaks volumes of how Richard's career went in its twilight. The two raced together in 349 races between 1979 and 1992. Kyle comes out on top most times beating his father 186 times while Richard came in ahead of Kyle 163 times. But the details are bit the other way, Richard won 10 times during that period and Kyle won 6 races. Richard led in top fives 61 to 37 and top tens 122 to 117. Kyle averages out a bit better though pulling down a 16.5 average finish to Richard's 18.0.

Bobby and Davey Allison...

The least number of head to head races of this group, for reasons quite obvious to those who remember them both. And by far the most intense and closest competition. The two ran together 43 times in just the seasons from 1985 to 1988. The old man holds the narrowest of margins coming in ahead of Davey 22 times while Davey finished in front of Bobby 21 times. During those races they each took the checkers twice, once with Davey right on Bobby's tail at Daytona. Top fives go to Davey who has 14 while Boby has 9. Top tens are even at 20 each. Bobby averaged one spot better than Davey with an average finish of 15.1 to Davey's 16.1.

Nah, Kerry WAS racing. He was getting split high and low and had he just backed out a bit I doubt the car would have come around. on him.

Good advice...maybe driver #8 will learn someday to back out when it isn't handling!
