What is everyone's opinion of these? Years ago I would tune in an old police scanner to team frequencies during the race and it worked great - but its been some time I am not sure if that even works anymore.

You'd have to be within range of the track. Their signals aren't all that strong and don't carry all that far.

When I think of old police scanners I'm thinking of the base type unit sitting in your house plugged into the wall. Do you mean a portable hand held scanner?

i have uniden race scanner that i use. but since i hardly go to races now, it's just sitting there. i know if you have R E racing scanner you can stop by their trailer and they will program all the race teams in for free, but with my uniden they wanted 5.00.

The newer scanners from RE are programmed OTA. You only have to be near one of their haulers and push a button on their scanner. It programs itself. Too freakin cool. I can't justify the cost of an upgrade of a couple scanners and four headsets. I'm still stuck in the early 90's technology when it comes to race scanners. They still do the job just fine.

Yes the portable scanners like this guy. I used to look up the frequencies before the race and program them myself. I haven't brought it to the track in about 5-10 yrs because it was just one less thing to carry and I didn't want to be cut off with friends at the race.

I have an old Radio Shack scanner that I still use at the track. It looks an awful lot like the pic that you posted. It works fine. You should have no problem.

i had 2 headsets, 1 with intercom and 1 without, let my nephew use it when he went to races with his friends, well he loses 1 of the headset, can you guess which one.

Damn. That's sucks.

The day that I do upgrade it will be to a setup having the ability to communicate. We've got a little white board for the hard to hear places like Bristol. The noise there is relentless.

Most of those channels that you programed 5-10 years ago will still work today. Very little has changed other than the names.
you're right about that, most teams have 2 and 3 channels each. a lot of people just rent em from R. E. at the track. i wish i would have checked out that fan view scanner RE was doing, i believe they have stopped that now, but it looked like it would have been cool.

funny you said that, bristol was the reason i bought mine, a couple of buds in our circle already had the intercoms and they work great trying to talk to each other at bristol.

http://www.fanvision.com/nascar replaced the old one. I've never used it myself but I've sat near other that have.

This is what I rent at the track now since they did away with fanscan. If you ask when you buy your tickets you can usually get a $15 off coupon for a weekend rental. And yes I love it.

EDIT: DP you beat me to it by ten seconds. :p

that looks sharp. i'm just scared of not owning my stuff. i can see myself dropping it on the concrete steps at bristol and well gonna up to the RE trailer with it in pieces, but i guess if i used the right credit card it would cover it being broke

They're pretty tough with a thick rubber shock absorbing case. I've never had a problem. At the top of their web page click on Nascar hospitality where they have the pictures of them in the protective cases.

R.E, is about the best that i have seen and it is the same ones that we use on our race team. They also have tech support at every race.

i tried to sell my scanner and headset and found nobody wanted it, now it just sits and collect dust. my friends just want to borrow it, not buy it, so i lie and tell em i don't have time to find it as i'm looking straight at it.

I have a Uniden scanner that's about 10 years old and crap. I need a new one.

Wish they were at Nationwide races. Going to Road America for the Nationwide race and a few in my group are complaining about not being able to see the whole race. Road Course rookies. What are you going to do with them? Anyway, this fanvision would have been a nice solution.

I have to travel so far to the races that the only stand alone Nascar race I go to is the Eldora truck race. Last year I rented a Fanvision so maybe they rent them at the other stand alone races. Call the track and ask them.

Sprint sucks. I had the old "FanView". Nothing wrong with it but they changed the format so my FanView became obsolete. $400 and it lasted 4 years. Spuck Frint.
