Back in the days the TV Western was far away the most dominant genre on the tube. Doubt that any other has seen the proliferation that was present in late fifities into the sixties.

"Bonanza" and "Gunsmoke" likely still rank among the longest running shows in history. I recall reading somewhere that as many 30 different westerns were running at one point in time.

For those who remeber those days or have caught some of the shows in syndication, What was your favorite?

Mine were (still are for that mattter) "Maverick" and "Have Gun Will Travel".

"My Pappy always told me............" always led to some great line.

Paladin was just too cool!

:D

I always like the "Rifleman", and of course "Bonanza". How about the "Lone Ranger"?

Westerns are, by far, my favorite genre of movie. I wish that I were around during that time to enjoy those shows.

If it matters, I really liked Lone Ranger (it was on syndication when I was young) and I really liked Maverick.

I never got into TV westerns, but for some strange
reason, those spaghetti westerns with Clint Eastwood
always catch my eye...

Bonanza, Gunsmoke and The Wild Wild West.( like a western Bond movie)

Oh, the memories.

Let's see ----
Have Gun, Will Travel
Maverick
Wagon Train
Bonanza
The Rifleman
Gunsmoke
The Lone Ranger -- I started with the radio version!
The Wild Wild West

5car, too bad ya missed the TV westerns.

Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates in "Rawhide" was one of the great ones. Theme song was good too!

As a matter of fact lots of the theme songs for them were good. How many folks know the the "Bonanza" theme had lyrics? It was actually sung by the main cast members in one of the first episodes. Lorne Green recorded it as well.

Rawhide was the one that I couldn't think of when I posted originally. I used to love watching all of the westerns on sundays.

Lots of folks who moved to bigger fame were in the old westerns.

Steve McQueen was the "Bounty Hunter"

James Garner was Brett Maverick

Roger Moore was Beau Maverick

Burt Reynolds was the blacksmith for a bit in "Gunsmoke"

Lots more that don't come to mind, and tons of them that had bit parts that hardly anyone remembers.

I feel so young, thanks folks. :)

Seriously though, if it isn't speed that's on it's the Western Channel.

Anybody remember these. HIGH CHAPPARRAL AND CIMARRON STRIP.

Big Valley, High Chapperal (sp),and Danniel Boone are some more. The Virginian I think is another one. Wagon Train is another one too.

OMG, all my old faves mentioned in one thread.

Where are the good old westerns now?? and no new ones.

I do not like sit-coms, most are just a farce and waste of time.

David Canary is now a BIG soap star now BTW.

Barbara Stanwick will always be a true classic.

RAWHIDE, git'm up.....I still can hear that song but don't remember the words

Rolling, Rolling, Rolling, keep them doggies rolling rawhide...

Here's the words
Keep movin', movin', movin',
Though they're disapprovin',
Keep them dogies movin', rawhide.
Don't try to understand 'em,
Just rope 'em, throw, and brand 'em.
Soon we'll be livin' high and wide.
My heart's calculatin',
My true love will be waitin',
Be waitin' at the end of my ride.

Move 'em on, head 'em up,
Head 'em up, move 'em on,
Move 'em on, head 'em up, rawhide!
Head 'em out, ride 'em in,
Ride 'em in, let 'em out,
Cut 'em out, ride 'em in, rawhide!

The ending lyrics are:

Keep rollin', rollin', rollin',
Though the streams are swollen,
Keep them dogies rollin', rawhide.
Through rain and wind and weather,
Hell bent for leather,
Wishin' my gal was by my side.
All the things I'm missin',
Good vittles, love and kissin',
Are waiting at the end of my ride.

Move 'em on, head 'em up,
Head 'em up, move 'em on,
Move 'em on, head 'em up, rawhide!
Head 'em out, ride 'em in,
Ride 'em in, let 'em out,
Cut 'em out, ride 'em in, rawhide!
RAWHIDE!!!
