well, I just posted in teh "favorite track" thread, and was thinking... "I wonder what tracks people REALLY MISS!"

Well? what track/tracks do you miss?

For me... the track is still "on the schedule" technically, but, the pre 1997 Atlanta Motor Speedway is what I miss most.

Yet, North Wilkesboro is another I miss too.

Toss-up between Rockingham and North Wilkesboro....have to lean towards North Wilkesboro.

Its not a track that i really miss but its the DAY bud shootout. I hate the fact they are making part of speedweeks at night cuz When i think about a night race i think of May with the great racing at richmond and charlotte...not daytona in Feb.

There is a track that Nascar ran "one" race at. I did not see the Nascar race but i did see a "wild" Trans Am race there in season 2000. I would love to see Nascar race at this track again.......Road America.

The Beach at Daytona - I CAN'T BELIEVE they took that track off the schedule!

Anyone else here remember Riverside? Especially Turn 9?

How about Trenton and Langhorne?
Or Islip, Fonda or Oxford?

At least Fonda and Oxford are still running weekly shows, so I guess we should be thankful for that.
(I think Fonda is still in operation, isn't it?)

Speaking of Oxford Plains Speedway, the Nascar Busch North Series will have it on their schedule in 2005.

TRL,

Didn't I read something a while back about the old Texas World Speedway having been sold and being refurbished for testing use, driving schools and SCCA events?

Or is it merely my demented old brain playing tricks on me?

Did you ever get to Milwaukee when NASCAR and USAC ran those combined stockcar events? Probably the mid to late 60's or early 70's?

Best drivers and cars from both series and some fairly decent racing on a flat dirt mile. Sort of disproves those who try to tell me that stockcars need to have the tracks built with a certain amount of banking in order to put on a good show.

But what would an old-timer know about good racing?

I wonder how many people that miss Wilkesboro ever went to a race there the place was a single grove with bumps and crummy concessions and the traffic in and out of the place was horrible . I miss the short track racing but not Wilksboro.

I kind of agree with you, Pandora. Only was there once, but was not impressed at all.

But, to each their own. :)

Two tracks Nascar should run Eldora and the Syracuse Mile Both places could be set up to handle a big enough crowd for Nascar they are in the lucretive NY and OH markets and we get to see Cup cars on dirt it dosent get better then that .

i would like to see a race on dirt. be pretty interesting who can control throttle and get the setups down.

Never had the opportunity to attend a race at North Wilkesboro. Only got to see it on ESPN and never had to worry about the crummy concessions and horrid traffic.........and if I had experienced that, it may have affected my choice. :) But it was almost always a wild race to watch on TV!! :beerbang: Probably because of that single groove and bumpy surface......but remember who my all time favorite is!! :D

After thinking about it abit . I would rather watch guys have to punt guys out of the way to pass . Line up for 30 minutes for a burger and sit in traffic for 2 hours to go home then see a race at any of the new cookie cutter tracks . Maybe Wilksboro wasnt so bad .

If ANYONE had the money to invest, I'd head up the "Rebuild Atlanta '97" compaign! LOL

It doesn't have to be IN Atlanta, but, that track was AWSOME before they went all "cookie cutter" on it. :(

it was a true OVAL, and it was AWSOME race'n! fast, bumper to bumper... side by side... tire wear, fuel mileage.... you name it. Ya had to prepare for it. Now, it's gone.

Don't get me wrong, the "new" atlanta is fun to watch, but, I miss the good ole days "pre cookie cutter" days of Atlanta.

When that happened, and the carousel was taken out of the cup race at Sonoma, I knew we were in for a bad streak when it came to "track changes".

i have been to North Wilksboro about 15 or 20 time LOVED the place, guess you would just have to be an old timer like me to love crummy concessions and a bumpy worn out old track

Well, I'm sort of an old timer too and I have no problems at all with crummy concessions and bumpy worn out tracks. In fact that's exactly were I am most Saturday nights during the racing season. But, the price is right.

On the other hand, if I have to lay out a small fortune to experience big time racing and it's associated super show, I expect a little more.

However, as someone mentioned, the televised races were always great.

I was there only 3 times and in my teens the last time when it closed . Tell us wippersnappers what you really liked about the place ?

it was like home to me, same with BMS before Bruton bought it, and richmond when it was a 1/2 mile track.
Wilksboro and the local tracks were what i was raised on, ever been to kingsport speedway in TN. they were fun to go to, now days it seems to me (i could be wrong)the majority of the folks goin to the races are just there to be seen and want to be pampered like they were at home. guess i just miss seein real races.

I hear you loud and clear. Know exactly where you're coming from.

Real racing can happen anywhere. But in order to sell tickets, tracks have to stay up-to-date in front as well as behind the grandstand.

Well I guess the racing was real enough but the rat that ran thru the ladys restroom was definitley real on my last trip there .I remember that rat better then I remember Jeff Gordon winning the race .

And best of all North wilkesboro is not too far from "Doc Watson" country.:)

They have made some improvements to the track and do host test sessions and commercials.
