Ferrari Teams Fined $1 Million For Austrian Grand Prix Fiasco

PARIS, FRANCE (June 26, 2002)
The World Motor Sport Council imposed a fine of $1 million (USD)
on Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro, Michael Schumacher and Rubens
Barrichello jointly, half to be paid immediately and half to be
suspended for one year. The fine will become payable immediately
should a similar offence occur within the next twelve months.
The World Motor Sport Council held that Rubens Barrichello,
Michael Schumacher and Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro were each
guilty of failure to observe Article 170 of the Formula One
Sporting Regulations.

NASCAR 2003? Think Mike Helton would do something like that?:)

But what gets me, is that Ferrari wasn't fined for pulling Barrichello over --- they were fined for not following correct podium procedure!
Guess that was all they could find in the rulebook.

Ferrari Teams Fined $1 Million For Austrian Grand Prix Fiasco

PARIS, FRANCE (June 26, 2002)

The World Motor Sport Council imposed a fine of $1 million (USD) on Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro, Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello jointly, half to be paid immediately and half to be suspended for one year. The fine will become payable immediately should a similar offence occur within the next twelve months

The World Motor Sport Council held that Rubens Barrichello, Michael Schumacher and Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro were each guilty of failure to observe Article 170 of the Formula One Sporting Regulations.

The podium procedure was not followed. Having finished second, Rubens Barrichello, who is a Brazilian national, stood on the top step while the German national anthem was played for Michael Schumacher. Michael Schumacher then ascended the top step and both drivers, rather than just the winner, stood there while the Italian national anthem was played. Michael Schumacher took the trophy for first place from the Austrian Chancellor, did not acknowledge him, handed the trophy to Rubens Barrichello and then took the second place trophy from the Austrian Deputy Chancellor.

It is the duty of each team to ensure that its contracted drivers observe the podium procedures and do not in any way embarrass the national authorities of the country where a grand prix takes place.

The WMSC deplored the manner in which team orders were given and executed at the Austrian Grand Prix. Nevertheless the Council finds it impossible to sanction the two drivers, because they were both contractually bound to execute orders given by the team.

The Council also recognised the long-standing and traditional right of a team to decree the finishing order of its drivers in what it believes to be the best interest of its attempt to win both world championships.

In the circumstances, the Council decided; with some reluctance; that it could take no action over the team orders given by Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro at the Austrian Grand Prix.

Wait what's this I hear...."Hendrick teams fined 1 million for using traction control(4 wheel drive found in pooo's car)....the payment was payed in full by Jeff himself. That traction control really payed off for him last year making a mere 6.6 mil. After he was seen leaving with that hot pboy girl.

That's no fair enough, 1 million dollars for a team which spend 200 millions/year? that's not an enough fine for the Sect from Maranello. For the fair should be:

$5 Million dollars
Retire of the points
Ban for 3 races.

Chao!!!

Geez, and I thought a $50,000 fine in NASCAR was a lot! I stand corrected.

Guys...guys...guys...Come on now....
The regulation states...that the team-play is allowed and part of the f1 rules...On the other hand the refusal of MS to take the podium...is not...and that is why the Ferrari Team was fined...
My opinion is that...(not that you asked for it...lol)....fine or no fine...MS did well to RB. MS didn't not deserve that win...Rubins did...and if MS would have taken the podium...it would have been the ultimate insult to his team mate and to himself as a driver....This line of discorse is based on sentiments....

On the business side...think for a moment....if at the end of the year MS himself or Ferrari would have lost the championship for those few pesky little points....ehm!!!!
