Busch, McMurray cleared to drive for new teams in 2006

November 7, 2005
CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) - Jamie McMurray received his release from Chip Ganassi Racing on Monday, clearing the way for a driver swap that affects three teams in 2006.

Reigning NASCAR Nextel Cup champion Kurt Busch will go to Penske Racing to replace Rusty Wallace, who is retiring at the end of the season. McMurray will take over Busch's spot at Roush Racing and Ganassi will field only three cars in 2006.

In July, McMurray signed a deal to drive for team owner Jack Roush in 2007. The next month, Busch announced he signed a deal for Penske in 2007 and wanted out of his contract from Roush, which was worked out.

"We are pleased that Kurt and Roush Racing were able to reach an agreement on Kurt's release," said Roger Penske, chairman of Penske Racing South. "Kurt's joining us for 2006 will provide a smooth transition for the team and our sponsors."

Ganassi refused to release McMurray from his contract until Monday. Now Ganassi will move Casey Mears to McMurray's No. 42 Dodge in 2006. Mears will have David Stremme and Reed Sorenson as teammates.

"We worked hard to find a driver solution and we couldn't be happier with how things are shaping up for the 2006 season," Ganassi said.

ALSO HEARD BOBBY LABONTE IS NOW CONSIDERING DRIVING THE 22...
