DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR issued fines and penalties Monday to four Nextel Cup Series teams, resulting from rule violations this past weekend at New Hampshire International Speedway.

Kasey Kahne

Kasey Kahne, driver of the No. 9 Dodge, was fined $25,000 because of an on-track altercation with another competitor during a caution period and placed on probation for the remainder of the year. Kahne violated Section 12-4-A of the series rule book (actions detrimental to stock car racing).

Kahne was also penalized 25 driver championship points and car owner Ray Evernham losing 25 owner championship points.

"There have been a growing number of incidents lately where drivers have taken matters into their own hands. Such unsafe and inappropriate behavior has to stop," said NASCAR President Mike Helton.

"NASCAR will use whatever means necessary to stop it."

Lance McGrew, crew chief for the No. 25 Chevrolet driven by Brian Vickers, was fined $10,000 and placed on probation for the remainder of the year. The No. 25 team had its primary car confiscated after the weekend's initial inspection process, due to an unapproved car body.

Vickers was penalized 25 driver points and car owner Mary Hendrick was penalized 25 owner points. The team was in violation of Section 12-4-A and Section 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment that do not conform to NASCAR rules).

Robby Gordon, driver of the No. 7 Chevrolet, was fined $25,000 for attempting to hit another competitor's car during a caution period, and then throwing his helmet at another competitor's car. Gordon also was fined $10,000 for use of improper language during a television interview during the race.

Each fine was accompanied by penalties against Gordon of 25 driver points and 25 owner points against James Smith. In addition, Gordon has been placed on probation for the remainder of the year. In each instance, Gordon was in violation of Section 12-4-A.

No. 15 Chevrolet driver Michael Waltrip, involved in the on-track altercations with Gordon, was fined $10,000 and penalized 25 driver points because of an inappropriate gesture during a televised broadcast, while car owner Teresa Earnhardt was penalized 25 owner points. Waltrip was also in violation of Secton 12-4-A.

wheeeeee i bet NASCAR'S OFFICIALS are loving it, never have they taken so many points/money from driver in one week

he gave him the finger, then changed it to a wave. On the in car replay of when he threw the helmet, you can see him stick his hand out, extend his middle finger and then change it a wave...they didn't show it again though.

what is mikey thinking? changing the mid finger to a wave..that's lame

As long as he knows he didn't do anything wrong...but hey, when you're perfect, its hard to be around so much imperfection.

What a joke! They deserved to sit out at least one race. Great for the ratings though..how many more will watch/go to the race there next year....it's a shame ratings go before good sportsmanship.....

The thing with Mikey is that TNT was showing a replay of the in car video...... the finger was never televised lived.

TNT could have avoided Mikey's middle finger being televised.

But what's the big deal about the finger? Can't one driver flip another one off?
Nascar really does want a bunch of robots running in circles.

Next thing you know they'll be docking points for giving a driver a dirty look!

It’s a hard call I know but they need to take more points away from the drivers and raise the fine $100,000 ect. I know I would be highly pist for paying $100.00 for a NASCAR ticket and attend the race and my favorite driver wasn’t racing that day! Its one thing to penalize the drivers/team but the fans is another thing.

I just think this was the perfect oppertunity to REALLY make an example out of someone. This was one of the best situations NASCAR could have used to get people to stop the Crap of wrecking other teams cars.

:beerbang: :beerbang: My feelings exactly. NASCAR really missed the call on this one. If they don't police it, then they shouldn't get all bent out of shape when it happens.

Nascar was kinda soft on the fines. I do now wonder what impression the drivers will get out of this.

People, you forget what made this sport what it is today. Even Wally said that this sort of thing isn't going to stop. For those of you who are nebies, back in the day before there were real safety features in these cars, the drivers actually tried to wreck other drivers. Fights were a common place and it all ended pretty much right there at the track. Yes, it helped bring in the people as did the wrecks that the news showed each week for the coverage of the race, but the drivers all were in it for the sport. You just can't turn off emotions like it had a switch and we've seen it time and time again when the pit reporters would stick a microphone into the face of a driver who was just involved in an incident that he didn't think was his fault. How many times have we seen these guys change their tunes after they have had a day off to think about it all? Yeah, there are those who kept emotions going for a while, waiting for a chance to retaliate, but again, you will never change that. I can see the front office of NASCAR right now talking about how they have to let everyone know that they are trying to keep this type of action under wraps, but on the other hand, they know that this sort of thing will help bring in the big crowds.

Me? I think it is stupid to fine high spirited men for using words or gestures that can be seen and heard on any school grounds in the country. Now if one of them comes up with a gesture or word that NONE of us knows the meaning of then maybe that would be cause for consideration.. TV has it's own standards to abide by.
NASCAR is being silly about the words and gestures.

Well, all I can say is...if the fans made racing what it is today, then the fans have to accept their driver sitting out a race or 2, can't have it both ways. Nascar missed it badly this time...they could have stopped the crap or at least slowed it down.

Yes, I agree...Nascar does need to lighten up and TV needs to stop trying to find things to create drama. Remove the invasive cameras, stop listening in on the radios, give the drivers back their privacy and let them vent in private. At least this way the drivers, crews, etc can get things off their chests and we don't have to listen/watch it all.

Baseball players charge the mound, football players push each other and talk a lot. Words will be said, tempers will flare and there is nothing that you can do about that. Things are going to happen on live TV and NASCAR should take responsibility to the FCC for what happens during their events. Punish the Racers? It is not the fault of the racer that NASCAR and/or the network just so happened to air something live that could "offend" others. NASCAR and/or the TV network should take the hit on that and just let the boys race.

Now see I don't agree. Sometimes it is the racer's fault.
Why when Lil'E is leading, much less winning, I find that to be very offensive... ;)

So, the racers should censor what they say or do inside the car so it doesn't upset the public? I understand that outside the car, they should act professional and not blow up on the track or anywhere, but in their own car?

I guess in this case it makes perfect sense NASCAR should've made an example and suspend the driver, most people don't like Robby so he's the perfect one to use. However, it is pretty much a precident by NASCAR that before severe penalties are given the driver is atleast on probation first, and Robby wasn't
What I also find funny is people cheered DJ for his actions a few weeks ago, but are having a hissy fit over Kasey Kane. Why?? DJ spent a few laps in the pits repairing his car, then several laps went by before Newman went to pass him and he deliberatly wrecked him. In other words it seems DJ had atleast 30 min to cool down and for his spotter and CC to calm him down.
Kasey's retaliation atleast was spur of the moment for what just happened.
