Firestone in NASCAR? on Monday's WInd Tunnel with Dave Despain [Speed Channel 10:00pm/et], Robin Miller reported that Firestone supposedly will test a Truck Series truck or Busch Series car in 2005 with a Toyota engine and Firestone tires, similiar to what Scott Pruett did in the early 1990's, where he tested Firestone tires for a full season. Goodyear has a contract with NASCAR thru the 2007 season, so Firestone couldn't come in the Cup Series until 2008.(10-19-2004)

Thats just what Nascar needs, Tire Wars
ranting.gif

anybody remember the last one???

Yup. Wasn't that the year Ernie Irvan had his bad wreck from a blown tire?

Firestone isn't an american company. No non-american tire companies.

MillerMagic, Firestone USED to be a USA tire company!!!!
I used to pass the giant facility on the 5 freeway everyday.
It employed thousands of peeple!!!
Then, Bridgestone took over and it was no longer a USA totally owned company. That was back in the late 50's, early 60's.
Like ALL of our automobile industry today; most cars, Dodge, Chevy, Buick, Ford, are most fabricated from parts made in other countries!
Some, like Toyota are final assembled here in the states.
There is no more, a PURE American car that you could buy.

And a Tire War????????

Bring it onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!! LOL

IMO. There won't be a tire war any more. The contract will go to the highest bidder. End of story.

Jeez, as a fan of competition, I welcome another tire company into the fray, but I'm sure that there will be many, if not most, who will be against this. It's bad enough that the santioning body wants the bodies to be alike, and they have to use the exact same gasoline. Lord knows why they aren't regulated to use the same motor oil. I remember those "tar wars" of yesteryear and I remember the arguments against having two different makes in the competition. Personally, I'd like to see all the teams as different as night and day, but that would only be two different teams. :) But I think you know what I mean. Firestone has been in the business of making racing tires for a long time and I'm sure they know what they are doing. It all boils down to profits and if Goodyear is forced to stay competitive with another make of tire, their profits will of course be skewed because they will have to work harder to stay on top. The same for any other tire company. As for being a US company...I ask you, are the Monte Carlos built in Canada or Mexico? How about the Taurus? Even if the cars are made in the US, are they totally made in that factory? How about the Toyota? Honda? Nissan? Kia? Whoops, sorry bout that one, but one of these days... When NASCAR brought Toyota into the game in the truck series, it stepped into the 21st Century.

Very well put Buck.

Bridgestone-Firestone employs far more people in the USA than Goodyear does. That is documented fact. I live in Akron, worked for Goodyear and now work for Firestone so I'm pretty sure my facts are accurate here. Goodyear makes a much greater percentage of their tires in places like Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Bangladesh(sp?), Indonesia etc. than they do here. Once upon a time almost all the tires made by either company were made right here in my hometown, but that hasn't been the case for many years. My dad built tires for Goodyear for 44 years and my brother for over 20 years, although my brother had to move to Tennessee to keep his job when it moved out of Ohio. Goodyear has harmed our local economy greatly by laying off most of it's remaining work force here because they bought Sumutomo a few years ago and lost billions by doing so. Several people made millions in the process of buying the unprofitable japanese company, but the company took an incredible hit in the process. Most everyone involved in that left with their golden parachutes while hundreds of thousands were left to pay the bill for it.

I know dragonlady 424. But Goodyear is an american company. Its weird because american cars arn't made in american and some forign cars are.
