Scott Sharp and the Kelley Racing team have a firm grip on the tough 1.5-mile Homestead-Miami Speedway after the first practice for the Toyota Indy 300, as Sharp led the opening session by more than 2 mph.

1996 IRL IndyCarTM Series co-champion Sharp turned a top lap of 26.4535 seconds, 204.132 mph in the No. 8 Delphi Dallara/Toyota/Firestone. Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves was second at 26.7371, 201.967 in the No. 3 Marlboro Team Penske Dallara/Toyota/Firestone.

Rookie Roger Yasukawa rounded out the top three at 26.8758, 200.924 in the No. 55 Panasonic ARTA Dallara/Honda/Firestone. Two-time defending series champion Sam Hornish Jr., who also is a two-time defending winner of this event, was eighth at 27.1686, 198.759 in the No. 4 Pennzoil Panther Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone.

While Sharp had a sizable gap over the field, it's tight from spots two through 14. Less than one second separates Castroneves from Felipe Giaffone, 14th at 27.7360, 194.693 in the No. 21 Hollywood Mo Nunn Racing Panoz G Force/Toyota/Firestone.

btw, second session is underway and the IRL has live timing and scoring on their site for free.

Sarah Fisher was the fastest Chevy!! In 7th place out of 23 cars. That is pretty good for a motor that is suppose to be underpowered, compared to Toyota and Honda!!
