First time race question

I have tickets for the Cup race at Atlanta next weekend. The race starts at noon. How soon before the start should you plan to be at the track? (I know, today would be the best. But I have to work next week :D ) I live in Spartanburg, SC and am leaving early Sunday morning. It's about a 2.5 hour drive to the track in normal conditions. (if there is such a thing in Atlanta) I don't really know what to expect for traffic and congestion and would really hate to be late for the start. If any of you race veterans could give me some advice I would greatly appreciate it!

Right now, my plan is to leave here around 5:00AM. Is this early enough?

I have heard that traiffic into and out of AMS is Horrible! If its only a 2.5 hour drive on a good day then it will proanly take you 4 hours to get to your seat . I say 5 is a good time to leave if you want to se all the sight and sounds of race day morning.

If you leave Spartanburg at 5 AM you will have plenty of time to get into the track and likely not have a lot of trouble doing so. But even with no traffic the track is more than 2.5 hours away from you, the is well south of Atlanta (Hampton, GA)

There are (were) some good back road ways into the track, but although I know the ways I cannot remember the names of the roads so can't tell ya about them. As early as you will hit Atlanta by leaving at 5 AM do not use the perimeter (285) but go straight through town, should be no problem.

None of that is particularly important though. SI this ylur first NASCAR race, or your first at Atlanta? Either way the biggest thing is to have fun. Take binoculars and a stop watch if ya have one (you can buy one cheap is you don't have one). Never been in the new stands, but in the old ones a seat cushion was worth its weight in gold after about 3 hours. You should be at the track early, so if you have the bucks to spare rent yourself a scanner as soon as ya get to the track. If the crowd at the scanner rental place is small the folks there will usually gladly explain how to use it. It is simple and will be pre programmed with the frequencies you need.

That is kinda the basics, again the most important thing is to have fun.!!

Thanks PettyBenson and HS for your replies and info. We will plan to leave here at 5 pm. My brother is coming down from Rapid City, SD to go with me.

No HS this is my first Cup race ever. Last Thursday was my first NASCAR event. I went to Lowes for qualifying and the ARCA race. It was a blast! I can't wait for Sunday to come!!!!

I definitly want to rent the scanners so I can listen to DJ and the boys.

Thanks again!
