With three first time winners already this year, I was wondering what the record is for most first time winners in a season, and if it might possibly be broken this year. In the modern era, it looks like the record is 5, which has happened on 3 separate occasions (2001, 2002, and 2011)...

As far as if we can get to 6 this year, you'd think Chase Elliott has to win at some point, Erik Jones has been inconsistent but has shown he can run up front, Daniel Suarez is steadily improving, and Ty Dillon has been in the Top 5 in the late stages of a couple races this year. Plus you never know when something fluky could happen like with Buescher at Pocono last year. So it's definitely possible we could get to 6 first-timers in 2017.
