Speed: NASCAR Five Years Later: Speed Channel will air NASCAR Five Years Later, a one-hour special look at the sport of NASCAR five years removed from the loss of motor sports icon Dale Earnhardt, who died in a racing accident on the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500. The program will debut Feb. 14 at 8:00pm/et as part of Speed Channel's 70-plus hours of Speedweeks coverage from Daytona Beach. NASCAR Five Years Later, narrated by veteran motor sports broadcaster Eli Gold, will examine the global reaction to the tragedy and how it affected the sport in immeasurable ways. A definitive catalyst for change in the area of safety, Earnhardt's death also changed the entire demographic and marketing angle of NASCAR, instantly elevating his son, Dale Earnhardt Jr. to the top of the list of fan favorites. Earnhardt's widow, Teresa, as well as NASCAR President Mike Helton and Earnhardt's former crew chief Larry McReynolds are among those lined up to discuss the impact the man known as "The Intimidator" had and continues to have on the sport of NASCAR.
