It is a 15-year-old car with high mileage and a Kelly Blue Book value of less than $5,000.
Now an ad on eBay says the 1996 Lincoln Town Car -- which the seller claims carried the body of NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Sr. -- is for sale.
The price? How about $1.5 million?
The owner's name is not listed in the ad, but it bills the car, located in Huntersville, as "Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s Last Ride." As of Wednesday morning there were no bids, and the seller has set a deadline of next Tuesday.
Earnhardt was killed in a last-lap crash in February 2001 at the Daytona 500. His funeral was held several days later in Charlotte, and records indicate that Raymer Funeral Services of Huntersville handled arrangements. The funeral home apparently sold the hearse to Bill McKeithan, a Cabarrus County man, sometime in the past year.
An article on the website Jalopnik.com reports McKeithan sold the Lincoln Town Car last month to an unnamed man for $8,800. The article said McKeithan acquired the vehicle from the funeral home, then chose to sell it after watching the Daytona 500 in February and deciding he had no use for the car.
In the article on Jalopnik.com, McKeithan said he regretted selling the car.
According to the eBay ad, the car has 115,679 miles. The Kelly Blue Book value for a 1996 Lincoln Town Car with 115,000-plus miles is about $4,600.
