It is a 15-year-old car with high mileage and a Kelly Blue Book value of less than $5,000.

Now an ad on eBay says the 1996 Lincoln Town Car -- which the seller claims carried the body of NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Sr. -- is for sale.

The price? How about $1.5 million?

The owner's name is not listed in the ad, but it bills the car, located in Huntersville, as "Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s Last Ride." As of Wednesday morning there were no bids, and the seller has set a deadline of next Tuesday.

Earnhardt was killed in a last-lap crash in February 2001 at the Daytona 500. His funeral was held several days later in Charlotte, and records indicate that Raymer Funeral Services of Huntersville handled arrangements. The funeral home apparently sold the hearse to Bill McKeithan, a Cabarrus County man, sometime in the past year.

An article on the website Jalopnik.com reports McKeithan sold the Lincoln Town Car last month to an unnamed man for $8,800. The article said McKeithan acquired the vehicle from the funeral home, then chose to sell it after watching the Daytona 500 in February and deciding he had no use for the car.

In the article on Jalopnik.com, McKeithan said he regretted selling the car.

According to the eBay ad, the car has 115,679 miles. The Kelly Blue Book value for a 1996 Lincoln Town Car with 115,000-plus miles is about $4,600.

One of our local TV stations talked about this story last night and made it sound like someone already had a bid of $1.5 million on it.

Oh please, no one is going to pay that much for a hearse that Earnhardt rode in. For one of his racing cars, maybe, but not the hearse.

i see its removed now did they take it down or did the sale end?

Either the seller took it down or ebay found out that it was BS. You can still see an auction after its over. I'm thinking it was BS.

Looks like BS.

A listing for a 1996 Lincoln Town Car Hearse billed as Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s “Last Ride” has been removed from eBay.

The asking price for the hearse was $1.5 million and approximately six days remained in the bidding when it was pulled on Wednesday.

The ad said that the vehicle is located in Huntersville, N.C., which is just north of Charlotte. According to the listing, “On Feb. 21, 2001, this hearse took Mr. Earnhardt from a Huntersville, North Carolina funeral home to his final resting place. This is 100% verifiable to qualified buyers.”

According to WBTV.com in Charlotte, that statement is incorrect as Earnhardt’s body was not at the Feb. 21 memorial service and claims that it wasn’t until weeks later that the funeral home actually transported his body to the mausoleum.

Just someone with very poor taste trying to make money off Dale's name.
Maybe some one threatened the seller into thinking it may be their last ride.

Or maybe Teresa threatened to sue because the seller is using Earnhardt's name.
