For the off season the mega poll(s), it will be “who is the best current or active Sprint Cup Driver?”

This will work very much like last year’s contest “who is the best sprint cup driver ever?” where David Pearson was chosen as the greatest of all times by the Race Forums members.

This is a semi serious contest, obviously many will vote for the favorites regardless of facts. But this can be fun and even informative as we consider different careers.

There will be at least 32 of the most active drivers to choose from, the final 16 will be paired up against each other in one on one elimination rounds until we have a winner.

I hope as many as possible will participate.

There will be more explanations in this thread to explain the matchups etc…..

The drivers will be seeded the using, following four statistics averaged together:

-total wins
-win percentage
-Sprint Cup championships
-Championship rate (the percentage or ratio of titles compared to the number of races entered)

This will recognize total winning achievements over an extended period ex. Jeff Gordons leading win count, Johnsons leading amount of titles. But it will also index some of the younger drivers rapid rise among the ranks in a short period of time, ex Brads title in just his third season.

I will be doing this over the next few days, don't worry if the driver you think is best isn't rated as the number one seed. It is merely a tool or a point of reference for me to set up the polls.

For the purpose of this contest the best driver will be chosen by the results of the polls, again the initial seeds are just a starting point.

Again I am hoping for lots of participation and I hoping lots of people will contribute their thoughts and perspectives.
If you feel strongly about drivers talent, make that case.

Like last year's polls this can be a journey were we can respect the drivers and celebrate their careers.

The previous two posts may seem like insane nerdness, and that is probably right, but I will use it to seed the drivers. Half of the data is posted above; I will use a similar method to rate the drivers on championships. Afterwards I will average them up, and devise the poll matchups accordingly, but that will have to wait until tomorrow.

The highest seeds will be polled against the lowest.

Bill Elliot and Terry Labonte will not be part of these polls. I realize they still make a few occasional starts, but there biggest racing moments are gone and I do not believe we can evaluate them in terms of an active status. This is not meant to disrespect them, they are future Hall of Famers, but again I want the polls restricted to current and active drivers.

There are others with advance ages racing, but they are still running most races on the schedule.

The first ranking is a bit of a shocker , but the second ,on win percentage, is very interesting.

The drivers will be seeded the using, following four statistics averaged together:

-total wins
-win percentage
-Sprint Cup championships
-Championship rate (the percentage or ratio of titles compared to the number of races entered)

Using full career stats will make JJ an easy choice. If you define 'current' as 3 years and use just those stats, things could get interesting.

Using full career stats will make JJ an easy choice. If you define 'current' as 3 years and use just those stats, things could get interesting.

It will be up to each person to determine their own personal definition of current or active, that can be very recent, or an entire current career.
The stats aren't meant to be the only consideration, a voters intuition should be huge. I am using them intensively for the seeding to set up the polls fairly, and hopefully the final match ups will pit the best drivers against each other.

The nerd like approach is also an effort to be objective as possible. I don't want any surprise rules, and I want to be transparent.

COOL!

Let the off-season driver bashing commence!!

I'm gonna vote for Pee Wee whenever I get the chance. I'm just sayin...

Drivers are rated here by the best point finishing positions, based only on finishing in top 10
in points. For ties their next best season breaks the tie.
Drivers who have never finished in the top 10 points are rated by their career average finish.

The numbers were put together manually, if you see an error I will appreciate anyone letting
me know. Details aren't not a strength of mine.

So are we voting on them by current ability or by career acomplishments?

Vote on your intution, the above data can be used for reference, but I posted them to help me seed the drivers, it is ok to believe a particular driver is better even without the stats. The goal is to use the early rounds to pit the strong against the weak. By the time we reach the final 16 we will have some good matchups, by the final 8 there will be some great matchups.

As for defination of active I want voters to decide that for themselves. I just provided the terms "Active" and "Current", that can be the last 25 weeks or 25 years, based on a voters disrection.

The folkowing is the seed order listed on the far left side, and in order. All of these active drivers have won at least one Sprint Cup Race, recording one win is required to make the polls or contest.

Win percentage is the tie breaker. Kurt Busch and Matt Kenseth average the same overall in the four measurements , Kurt has a better win percentage and is seeded 4th, Kenseth is 5th. There is at least one other tie, and the same tie breaker is used.

but greg...the wrong guy won last years poll!!!! :D

just a heads up for the keslowski fans (you know who you are!), especially any band wagon jumpers ( i might fit here), start preparing your debate! jimmie and jeff fans: how do you overcome the "current" tag greg put on this poll? the tony crew has some history to lean on. and then there are the kyle fanatics who may have talent, but will have to step up for this arguement.

anxiously awaiting the matchups......

I agree with what you are saying . The Keslowski people will be pushing the most recent events and because his wins are fresh , he will get more mileage . Kyle could have used a chase win or two to revive his support . I also agree that Bill Elliott should have won the last pole and will be writing the mods over him being left off of this one.;)

Uh, what's with the stats for Robby Gordon? I thought this was 'current or active'. Terry Labonte and Bill Elliot started more races over the last two years than he did.

Fair enough and my mistake, I will put Terry Labonte and Bill Elliott into the contest, then post the revised seeding order.

:DI think the guys were just havin a bit of fun Greg . Terry and Bill are obviously a bit old for this grouping while Robby Gordon is younger and a better fit (in spite of his stats ) . IMO

This post charts the total number of driver wins, it does not consider win percentage.
The number on the left represents one of four numbers I will average for the seeding order
If there were no ties those numbers would go simply 1-37.
Since there are ties the numbers for the tied drivers are averaged, this keeps the total average calibrated.
For example Terry Labonte and Denny Hamlin are tied with 22 wins each, ranked 9th and 10th, both are averged at 9.5

This post simply tracks each drivers win %. It does not consider who has the most total wins
The number on the left represents the 2nd of four numbers I will average for the seeding order
The highest % is ranked #1, the lowest # 37

I can see where the dog is comin from . What with Mark Martin in there and all. You tell him Ted says Good Boy.

Revison, the 3rd of four numbers used to average for the seeding.
I will complete the seed order Saturday.
The contest will probably begin Sunday night.

:DI think the guys were just havin a bit of fun Greg . Terry and Bill are obviously a bit old for this grouping while Robby Gordon is younger and a better fit (in spite of his stats ) . IMO
No, I was actually going for the exact opposite. I agree that Terry and Bill don't belong. I think Robby needs to join them, not the other way around. But since the dog (name?) has already done all the work, more power to the people!

Too late, my dog is half way through recalculating. When I told him revisions were needed he just kept licking himself, when he doesnt stop to make eye contact it is a always a bad sign. I shall not revisit the point with him, besides this way folks can decide themselves, power to the people.
That's Phucking Phunny chit right there sunny.

Revison, the 3rd of four numbers used to average for the seeding.

Finally the fourth of four items I will average to determine the seeding.
These list point performance.
Drivers with the most titles are ranked best, when two drivers are tied the one with the most 2nds get the
tiebreaker, then the most thirds etc…
Drivers who have never finished top 10 in points are ranked the lowest, and seeded by their career average finish.

Finally after a lot of pomp here is the seeding order that will be used to establish the polls.

Greg, if I dropped a box of matches on the ground, could you count them in like 4 seconds? If you had that dog with you?

Will need to ask him first, and the first poll is fixing to be posted

Regarding the terms CURRENT and ACTIVE, I am expecting people to define them subjectively. That's fine with me and even if I wanted to, there is no way I could stop them. I also as the creator of these threads do not want to apply a strict legalistic definition. I also am trying to be careful not impose my own subjective bias, each person has the freedom or liberty to decide themselves.
However, I will explain my definition as long as it is understood that this is just the thoughts of another forum member. Should anyone disagree, I still hope they will participate on these threads using there own good judgement.

Here goes: As a longer driver is still fast and capable of winning I would consider them as current. Stats are good and provide some direction, but they are not the total sum of a driver, so intuition and good discernment is needed. I also believe the driver who performed the best does not always win. I would simply vote for the driver that his impressed me the most with his driving performance.
Again this is just my idea, no one else has to agree.

I would consider almost everyone as current except for : Terry Labonte, Bill Elliott, and Robby Gordon. But they are still here and anyone should be able to vote for them without apology.

Now on to bigger questions if I was voting between Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Brad Keselowski, I would vote for Gordon of the mid 90s, or JJ 2005 to 2010, or Brads last three years. All three can still win and dominate at times. The one who impressed me most at the best stages would get my vote.

Harvick v/s Bowyer ...oooh interesting . What have you done for me lately?
