"AOL's new strategy has different consequences for different groups of its current subscribers. As part of its strategy, the company said that it would begin aiming its marketing and services at subscribers according to the patterns of their use. Some users who are not very profitable for AOL may receive less customer service. Users who increase AOL's telecommunications expenses by spending a lot of time online on their low-speed connections may be encouraged more aggressively to switch to buying broadband access from another company, lowering the cost to AOL."

Why people continue to give them money, after this history of horrid abuse of their customers is beyond me. AOL is not the internet. You can get on the net with any other ISP for half the price.

Thanks Paul.I have one more week of using them here at my office, and then I will have roadrunner here also.:)

Well, Paul. I am perfectly aware of being sucked into the AOL trap. Please refer me to another isp and I would gladly drop-kick AOL to the curb. I don't know which ones are "good" and which ones are "bad". Any information that you can provide will be of a great service to me. Thanks, ahead of time.:)

I mentioned in this thread a cheaper plan with similar features. It's through Compuserve (owned by AOL the last I knew) at less than half the price of AOL ($9.94/month) and the same as most "mom & pop" ISP's.

I've been using it with no problems. Same dialup numbers and all. Your email addy would be [email protected]

I'm gonna give AOL the boot and save some bucks even though they'll keep my account going for months for free just to try and keep me as I would be a "target."

I'm currently in a big argument with AOL. They set me up with a Market account and a net savers plan without telling me. Then took 300 out of my account. I called them and cacelled and received the proper info to get money back. What happens the next month? They take my money again!! No money taken yet this month. But 600 taken out the last two. I wouldn't tell my enemy's to get AOL:mad:

Whoever uses AOL should be drug out into the street and shot.

Wow, that's pretty bad. Glad I've steered far clear from ever using AOL. The closest I'll get is using AIM, and that's only b/c it's free.

AIM is just as bad anymore, that's why people should use AIM+

Well of course, AIM+ or Trillion are the best ways to go.

I want even let the AOL CDs into my house! I'm afraid they'll attach themselves to my computer on their own. LOL

When I had to change from gateway.net, I looked into Prodigy, Juno, and Earthlink.

I won't even get into this one. I've had to deal with AOL several times, though not on my account. AOL is tops because they promote it so much. I've seen now where many of the others are taking them to task, especially about the price. Juno and Netzero are really making a push in this area. When I used a dial-up ISP, I used a local one and that was bought up by a bigger one until today, it is Earthlink. I would stay away from the larger companies if I have to go back to a dial-up.

Oh really? I'll ignore that statement.

I had a local ISP about 5 years ago, but they started have money problems so I tried GTE (now Verison), but they wanted to double my monthly if I spent more than 100 hrs online a month........so I went with Earthlink. Stayed with Earthlink a long time until Media One got cable internet in my nieghborhood.........Media One was bought by AT&T Broadband which I am with presently.:) If cable wasn't available, I would still be with Earthlink......their customer service was great.:)

Way back when (early 90's) I had CompuServe........lots of hidden charges!:D Would recommend them to anyone. Actually, I'd stay away from any of the "domain" type of providers........AOL, CompuServe, Prodigy, Juno, Netzero, MSN, etc.:(

My parents have been happy with MSN. I was debating Earthlink and MSN. My roommate has AT&T Broadband. I have all my downloaded music on his computer. After all its about 8 feet away from me as I type :)

I tried Earthlink. Never could get in touch with those people when I needed to.

Wow........I never once had a problem with Customer or Tech support while I was with them. On a couple of occassions I or my wife were experiencing problems that were really Windows problems, not Earthlink's, but they still helped with walk thrus on the phone and got the problem straightened out. Unless they have fallen off dramatically in the last year, I would recommend Earthlink to anyone.:)

actually I think earthlink is one of the best dialup isps out there especially if your gonna pay 20$ a month anyway. JMO

I use a local isp, but am prolly getting a SISP soon.

I'm currently fighting with aol too. I HATE pop ups and all of the sudden two weeks ago I started getting them when I signed on and off. They give you the option to not get them and my preferences were set so. I was emailing back & forth with tech support and they kept telling me how to set my preferences....sent me cookie cutter letters. I sent a scathing email asking if humans actually read the emails. I finally find out that setting my preferences to not get pops ups was useless because aol was overriding them. Yet their tech support kept telling me how to stop them!! The last email said that they would tell the marketing dept to take my acct off the list and that it might take a week. It's been a little over a week and I still get them. I'm currently searching for a provider that I think I'll enjoy.... I'm beyond furious with aol!!

PenskeGirl, some advice from our local computer radio hosts is that if you're using AOL and have a technical question or problem, never talk to the first person you get on the phone. Always ask for the next higher up tech. Remember, these people are supposed to try and help you stay with their program.

I always find it interesting that if I want to talk to a supervisor or want somthing straightened out, I get another freaking phone number :(

Penske girl, I searching too. So let me know if you found a good one. I'm kinda stuck between Earthlink and MSN.

I like the set up of aol and I was thinking about going with the walmart sevice because the format is so close to aol and it's half the price. I called last sunday and was on hold for 20+ minutes. I never once got a human. If I can't get a human on the phone, then I don't want the service. So, I went to walmarts webpage and sent an email about my displeasure and they replied with an email that gave me an email addy for their internet dept. That email was replied by yet another cookie cutter letter. The funny part was that it said that they didn't quite understand what my question was. My response to them was that I no longer had a question but that my last email was a C O M P L A I N T, and that if humans actually read these emails they would know that. I closed by asking them to please not reply because I just get pissed off even more with each response. LOL, their response to that was short & sweet.... please feel free to contact us if you should have any questions in the future. It's looking like I'm not going to find anything within the aol type of format. mng when I do find something I'll let you know, so long as you promise to reciprocate.

;)

Thanks Penskegirl :)

I'm paranoid about switching until I know if I'm going to get any of my cash back. Yeah I know its probably not likely. And yes I realize I'm paranoid :)

I didn't know Wal-Mart had a service, but lets just say I'm a former 6 year employee who sees the company in an unfriendly manner. :) No matter who it is, if you can't get a human, I totally agree.

The worst thing about AOL is that once you install it, you can NEVER get it off your computer.

We used a local ISP for dial-up, and it worked very well. I had used Juno before....never again. Until they get the cable installed in the area we moved to, we're using Earthlink. I can't really judge it, as our machine crashed a few days later.

i can get most of you quixnet isp service at either 17.99 or 19.99 a month it was great when i used dialup.
