For those of you that watched the Eldora truck race last night, I have a question for you. Was last night's race the first dirt track race of any kind that you have ever seen? I'm just wondering.

No, I've been to the dirt track at Charlotte motor Speedway when the WoO came by. It was great fun then and it was awesome to see trucks on dirt.

My brother also used to race Go-Karts and Mustang on dirt as well, so I grew up around dirt track racing. :D

No, but I'm not an expert. I love the world of outlaws but I can't really watch it with the limited tv coverage it gets.

as a dirt track veteran, i was curious also. considering the enthusiasm of many that posted during last night's race, all i could think was "if you think this is great on television, i hope you go experience it in person".

television just cannot capture the entire track, the speed, and the atmosphere of the live show. obviously not all dirt races are "classics". but if i had to choose between dirt and nascar, i'd pick dirt everytime.

I'd pick dirt every time as well.

I went to a local dirt race at Lebanon valley for my birthday a few years ago, it was a great time. got dirt on my glasses lol. I wanted to see WoO up there this year but it didn't work out.

No. Used to go to local dirt track a lot at Hales Corners, WI before the city closed it over noise complaints and it was promptly turned into a Menards.

i always blamed menard for the closing and held it against him as a lack of support for local racing. obviously the property was worth more as retail than a racetrack. didn't know noise complaints forced the closing.

Crewed a dirt car for 9 seasons now and this will be my last. Loved everything I saw last night people got to see what has had me going non stop for the last 9 years in racing.

Not for me. Not a big dirt racing fan but last night was definitely a nice change especially from the bigger tracks that don't produce the best racing. I enjoyed it, not something I want to see a whole lot of and definitely not in Cup.

Now I'll have to look it up to be sure. I seem to remember there being stories in the paper about the village of HC getting into bitching matches with the track about noise and curfews.

No, not my first experience watching dirt, but I'm no expert. I've probably been to 6 or 7 dirt races. From midgets, to DLM, to WoO.

I've watched worse dirt races live than the one I watched last night though.

That's why all the old SoCal racetracks died..

The Secret Is Out! Dirt Track Racing Shines on Big Stage
Eldora’s Mudsummer Classic showcases dirt racing excitement for fans, media
CONCORD, N.C. - July 25, 2013 - Austin Dillon won Wednesday night's NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Mudsummer Classic at Eldora Speedway in a field that included Kyle Larson, Dave Blaney, Matt Crafton, Brendan Gaughan, Ken Schrader, Kenny Wallace and Ty Dillon among others.
It was the first major NASCAR event on dirt in 43 years, and the reaction of fans, competitors and media indicates the event was a huge success, with people clamoring for more racing on dirt.
Well, believe it or not new dirt fans, dirt racing is not a secret. In fact, there is quite a bit of racing on dirt in this country every week, and odds are you don't have to look too far to find it. According to National Speedway Directory, there are 683 dirt oval tracks in the United States. Many of the drivers in the field for the Mudsummer Classic know where they are, too. All of those drivers above have competed in World of Outlaws or DIRTcar Racing events this season, in some cases even in the past week, and all on dirt tracks.
Did you know if you had gone to the DIRTcar UMP Summer Nationals race at Florence Speedway on Tuesday, July 9, in Union, Ky., you could have seen Mudsummer Classic winner Austin Dillon battle with Scott Bloomquist in a dirt late model? Bloomquist came out on top in a race that featured some of the best in the business.
If you had visited Lernerville Speedway on Tuesday, July 16, in Sarver, Pa., for the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series event, you would have seen Dave Blaney and Kyle Larson competing against the Outlaws, with Larson racing his way from 25th to second in a thriller. In fact, Larson won a World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series event earlier this year in his native California, and Blaney is one of the Outlaws' all-time heroes and winner of the 1995 championship.
Kenny Wallace? Well, he just finished competing in the DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals, a tour where he won the championship in 2012 racing on dirt tracks throughout the Midwest.
Ken Schrader? He was on the pole for the Mudsummer Classic last night but in February he hoisted the "Big Gator" after winning the DIRTcar Nationals UMP Modified championship at Volusia Speedway Park near Daytona Beach, Fla., a year after Ty Dillon claimed the Big Gator at Volusia. Oh, and Schrader also owns Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 in Pevely, Mo., which just so happens to be one of the raciest dirt tracks in the country that will host the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series Federated Auto Parts Ironman 55 the first weekend of August.
Crafton and Gaughan? Before they battled the Dillons last night at Eldora, they also unloaded UMP Modifieds in February at Volusia and raced against the dirt-tested grandsons of Richard Childress for eight consecutive nights on the fastest half-mile dirt oval in the country.
So now you know racing on dirt isn't a secret and it isn't exclusive. Racing on dirt is exciting. Racing on dirt pits the biggest names in the sport against local heroes. Racing on dirt is cool even on the hottest of nights.
But the best part of racing on dirt? You don't have to wait a whole year for it to come around again. Dirt racing happens darn near every night of the week at a local track near you.

I don't prefer one over the other. I've seen dirt Late Model races that were real ****shows and asphalt Late Model races that could put many dirt tracks to shame.

Saw my first dirt track race in 64 as a wee lad. racing 55, 56, 57, chevy's and fords sprinkled in with a first year chevelle or two. On thru the 70's with modified 6 cyl, and super modified, they started loosing me when they went to the rear steer stuff..stupidest looking race car in the world IMO. I go to the Chili Bowl to watch the midgets, and a small track to watch the mini street stocks. I think they have screwed up dirt as bad as Nascar has screwed up pavement with all the excess speed. I would like it to be like the old days when you went to the junkyard to get your race car and went from there. I think about the only thing worth racing out of a junkyard that has a frame and is plentiful these days would be P.U. Trucks. This race at Eldora proved my theory correct.

I've always cherished the old saying "Dirt is for racing, asphalt is for getting there." I have attended far more dirt tracks than paved. Thought El Dora was great though I've seen many even better. The track almost looked like oiled down asphalt. Seen local tracks look that way when they were using dish detergent and calcium on the track but the environmentalist put an end to that. Seemed they made it too hard to get any grip in the lower groves, but most dirt races I've been to the one grove tracks were at the bottom.
