Former NASCAR driver charged with making moonshine: Charges were filed late this morning in connection with a large liquor still found near the North Wilkesboro Speedway on Speedway Road and blown up by authorities Thursday night. Carl Dean Combs 57, of Speedway Road, North Wilkesboro [NC], was charged with manufacturing non-tax paid liquor, as well as one count each of possessing, possessing ingredients to manufacture and possessing equipment to manufacture non-tax paid liquor, said N.C. Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) Agent Shon Tally. Tally said Combs was at his nearby residence when he and other ALE agents found the still in the back of a gray shop building behind a go-cart track, near the North Wilkesboro Speedway (Wilkes Journal Patriot). Combs made 24 Sprint Cup [then WInston Cup] starts from 1981-1984 with a best finish of 8th at Atlanta in Nov 1983. He also was a five-time champion in NASCAR's now-defunct Goody's Dash Series and was a crew chief for car owner Junior Johnson.(3-4-2009) Comment here

Poor guy.........maybe he should move down here where it legal for your own use. Unless he was selling it:cool:

USA and Canada where it is illegal in most states to own a still but a Water Distillation unit is readily available from Sears catalogue.

Australia where it is legal to own a still under 5 litre capacity as long as it is for either either water purification or essential oil extraction.

New Zealand, Switzerland and Italy where it is legal to own a still and 25 litre stills appear the most common size. Click here for full instructions on distilling with a 25 litre Reflux still.

Pfft.

I know EXACTLY where to go to find moonshine here in So. MD.

Most people think that moonshine is something of the past, but it's still rampant. I wouldn't doubt that Jr. Johnson had a hand in this operation either. My neighbor has some land up in Wilkes County and has had some dealings with the ALE people, not for him, but asking about his neighbors, one of which is Johnson himself. Jack, my neighbor who is also my doctor has some great stories that he has told me. He also gave me a jar of what he said was the best shine in the country. :beerbang:

Shoot - In my younger years I even had moonshine up here in the Yankee North. LOL That was some potent stuff! :D They sell beer and wine making kits up here right in stores like J.C. Penney. I guess it's only bad if it's the strong stuff, eh? LOL

When I lived in the Berkshires back in the 90s we would have this huge party called the Dog Farm party every year around the first weekend in June. It would kick off summer, it was awesome, people would bring their Husky dogs, sled dogs, and such ,hence the name. Well there was always some "hooch" or "shine" around made by some of the locals. I love Tequilla so I thought I could handle this stuff.....wrong, man that stuff is killer.....lol.

He could have avoided the more serious charges if he had gone to the IRS and purchased a license. That keeps the ATF boys out of it and the Revenue officers. See, illegal to make is a State law not as a Federal law as long as you have paid the proper taxes. Its skirting those Federal taxes that carry the steepest sentence and gets the real enforcement agencies involved. Otherwise it would be Sheriff Andy and Deputy Barney doing the investigating and you know the county boys aren't going to get their shoes dirty.

moonshine

With the hard times ahead I wouldn't be surprised to see it make a big comeback. That is if sugar don't get to costing too much. Beats leaning on a shovel all day.

My guess is that he's already out on the street. A friend of mine just today showed me a quart jar of his stuff that he just recently got. Damn, it looked good. :beerbang:
