FOX/SPEED shafting Benson because of gun manufacturer sponsor?

GRAND RAPIDS -- Grand Rapids native Johnny Benson Jr. and his Red Horse Racing team are either going to have to continue its sponsorship search or accept less television time.

That's what the defending NASCAR Camping World Trucks champion said when he visited Grand Rapids on Monday with Michigan International Speedway president Roger Curtis.

Benson and the MIS staff were in town to promote the June 13 Michigan 200 Truck race, and Benson is hoping to have a sponsor by the time that date arrives.

It appears Benson has a company lined up, but the television networks that carry the races, including Speed, which airs the majority of the events, have Red Horse Racing putting the brakes on that plan for now.

SPEED refused in-car cameras in ARCA from Team Glock (which was a gun SAFETY promotion) last year and they were all but forced out of the series. :rolleyes:

At the same time, it's hypocritical because FOX has Jack Bauer running around every week shooting everything in sight.

and yet the networks have no problem with beretta sponsoring TMS?
 
i'm sure the recent spate of gun shootings is a big factor in why speed is refusing to give jb much coverage if he brings a gun sponsor onboard. it's not politically correct in the current environment and would surely attract detractors of nascar for being insensitive. i feel sorry for jb and his potential sponsor. none of this is their fault.

I'm sure if anyone else in that building in Binghamton had a gun, there would've been much fewer than 13 people killed. :rolleyes:

Doubt it. They would have been dead before they got to their guns. He fired an incredible amount of rounds within a minute. I forget exactly what they said on the news last night, but it was a ton. No one had a chance unless they had time to hide.
 
Wasn't Remmington on one of Sr's cars? Maybe it was just a one race deal but I do remember a gun manufacturer.
Glock was on a Busch car recently.

This is just plain stupid. If na$car ok'd the sponsor and paint scheme (which they hold final approval on) what standing does a network have?

If a network head cuts off his thumb with a Dewalt chop saw does that mean the end of showing the #17? If his car starts burning oil is that the end of showing the #29? Or he hates M &M's does that end #18 coverage?

This is bull****. Just one more reason that I'm losing interest in a sport I've followed and participated in for close to 40 years.

Brian needs to grow a set.

The company I work for, Smith & Wesson, sponsored a Busch car a few years back, I believe it was 2004 or 2005. I see no reason why gun companies can't sponsor a Cup, Truck or Nationwide car. Nascar needs to get off their high horse, it is hurting the sport!
 
It isn't NASCAR that is saying NO! It is FOX and Speed. NASCAR would let Somalia or Tehran sponsor a team if the $$$ was there... That would get all of you guys underwear in a bind, now wouldn't it? :D

All of this makes me wonder how long it will be until the winner at TMS will not be able to fire the six guns off during the victory celebration... PC has gone too far!

like i said though, that's what puzzles me. Beretta is a big name sponsor for TMS- but TV won't deal it.
 
I am normally a pretty positive person but this has really gotten my GOAT! I think there just might be too many tofu farting fairies in television that make the decisions for the rest of us... NASCAR has come a long, long way since I became a fan. I just hope It continues to grow!

I think I need to go to Winchester the weekend after next and watch USAC race and forget about NASCAR for a few days.

I just LOVE racing...
 
I want to see them run it and end up running out front all day. Would be the first time we get to watch racing in the back of the pack all day instead of just the front 2 or 3 guys all day lol Strange way to finally get em to do that lol

AGREED.

even more novel idea: interstate batteries run's on benson's truck for one race. In return, the gun company gets on Kyle busch's car for a race.
 
You have got to be kidding, right. If Fox is so scared to show a Gun sponsored race car, but they don't mind showing the six shooter celebration in Victory lane. I am so sick of P.C. BULL CRAP that is going on in this country. Them stupid politicians in D.C., wanting to ban guns.

Remington gave guns to the front row starters for years. They sponsored Rick Mast in Cup. How many people gets blown away on FOX every monday during 24? I watch it every week, and I haven't flown off the handle yet.
 
This is just another example of Bill and the Boys wanting to tighten their Gestapo like grip on the sport, and taking it down as they do so.
 
This is really stupid because the sponsors they do allow, a good deal of them I have no idea what they even sell. I also don't bother to look it up and find out either because that's not what I'm watching for. Sure I know the big ones, but some of the more obscure ones.. NO IDEA. Also, some might just be from certain areas so those in other areas of the country know nothing about them.

I don't run out and buy everything DuPont just because it's Jeff's main sponsor. I buy Pepsi OR Coke.. whatever is on sale. Maybe there are some crazy people out there who will only buy the brands their drivers sponsor, but that sure isn't me. I buy what I can afford and nothing on a race car is going to change that.

Just an FYI, this isn't NASCAR. This is the networks saying we're not going to put the cameras on this car if they run this sponsor. But, if Benson wins, what choice do they have?

or better idea, put the gun mfgr on Digger...
 
Well I was being conservative, should of said domething about more firepower....lol:eek:
