Friday Night's call on Matt Kenseth

Someone got me a DVD of portions of the race and I was analyzing the call they blew with Matt Kenseth. They asked while Kenseth was staring at the back of the pack on a restart after getting the lucky dog. Kyle thought it was because they had ten to go and they'd never had this before.

If I recall correctnyl, no matter the circumstance, there is no lucky dog inside 10 to go. Am I right? So why was it unfair for NASCAR to put Kenseth in that position then reverse it and give him 3rd.

Maybe someone else can explain but the restart was inside 10 to go, he NEVER should've gotten the free pass, am I correct in that?

There were more than 10 laps to go when the caution came out. Matt received the pass at that time. By the time the mess got straightened out, there were only 10 laps left.

What I've seen in the past is if the restart is within ten to go, the lucky dog is not awarded and no free pass is given. They were amking reference to this strange situation this time but even still, the rule states it clearly (or as clearly as NASCAR gets which is generally pretty foggy) and there should have been no free pass. It doesn't matter when the caution comes out.

The thing with all this is NASCAR hasd every intentions once the mess began with Mears and Edwards to run the laps down to within 10 to go, or at least that's what the commentators said NASCAR's clear intentions were. Carl's crew-chief said the same. At that point, once they knew they were going to have the restart inside ten to go, they should have reversed the free pass.

I don't think that was legit and I don't think Kenseth had any room complaining he was in the back of the pack on the restart (which he wasn't either).

Andy, he got the "Lucky Dawg" BEFORE the 10 to go lap.

Thanks for clearing that up - I guess it's just one of those odd circumstances. I still don't fully understand because it was NASCAR's intentions to run them down to 10 to go.

Maybe things will go a little better in this circumstance in the future.

Maybe NASCAR should drop lucky dog rule :idunno:

And perhaps they should let them race back to the stripe on the final lap or a caution circumstance in GWC... Too many of these races are ending in just straight up confusion.

It's not an odd circumstance at all. The Lucky Dog is dependent on how many laps are left to be run at the time of the caution. Not when NASCAR intends to throw the green flag. Those are two entirely different events.
