IndyCar driver JR Hildebrand injures knee, plans to race
FORT WORTH, Texas -- JR Hildebrand, the sympathetic figure from last month's Indianapolis 500 after his last-turn crash gave Dan Wheldon the victory, could use a little more sympathy. He has an injured knee. Hildebrand shrugged off speculation that he has a torn ligament, but he confirmed he has a significant amount of swelling that will make some aspects of this weekend's Izod IndyCar Series race at Texas Motor Speedway problematic. "It's going to make getting in and out of the car difficult for sure," the rookie said Thursday.
The injury occurred during a promotional event at TMS known as "Driven by Fitness." On an obstacle course, Hildebrand was competing against fellow IndyCar driver Ryan Briscoe. Hildebrand struck his knee on the final hurdle, breaking the board.
Hildebrand, whom many drivers say is the best athlete in IndyCar, tumbled to the ground and laid there for several minutes. The knee was wrapped Thursday, and it was clear by a grimace on his face that it pains him.
Hildebrand joked about racing Briscoe as hard off the track as he does on it. "You've got to beat those Penske guys," he said.
Panther Racing's driver expects to be able to drive the race car this weekend -- practice and qualifying is Friday, the Firestone Twin 275s are Saturday night -- because the left foot isn't used to push the brake as much on this high-speed, high-banked oval track as it is on road courses and street circuits. "It shouldn't be a problem, but we'll have to see," he said.
Hildebrand was fitted for a brace that is expected to arrive at the track today. Practice begins at 1:30 p.m. Eastern. Qualifying is at 4:30 p.m.
