Hitting the bricks
August 3, 2006
This weekend, the Nextel Cup Series makes its annual trek to the mecca of auto racing -- Indianapolis Motor Speedway. With a tight points races and only a handful of races left before the Chase begins, a lot will be on the line.

Ninth-ranked Jeff Gordon, already the winningest Cup driver at the Brickyard, will have extra motivation to pick up another victory at Indy. So will Tony Stewart, the 2005 Indianapolis winner, who sits perilously in 10th place in the standings.

Gordon and Stewart head into Indy as favorites, but they aren't the only drivers aiming for a good run this weekend. Kurt Busch, who was among the fastest during last month's testing at the Brickyard could certainly use a boost to get him into the Chase.

The newlywed Busch has a pretty decent record at Indy: three career top-10s, with an average finish of 16.2. Will he use this opportunity to inch up into the top 10?

"We're with a new team," Busch says, "piecing things together and we're making a strong effort to get into The Chase. That's all we can hope for. We can hope for no mistakes and hope other guys make mistakes. That's when you jump on 'em and gain the spots."
