They really want the Empire to strike back.

Citing a need for increased “space superiority” and job creation, over 13,000 people have signed an official petition on WhiteHouse.gov demanding that the United States government secure funds and resources and begin construction of a Death Star by 2016.

“By focusing our defense resources into a space-superiority platform and weapon system such as a Death Star, the government can spur job creation in the fields of construction, engineering, space exploration, and more, and strengthen our national defense,” reads the petition.

As of Monday morning, it had received 13,302 signatures -- far more than nearly every other petition on the site.

A proposal to increase the budget of NASA has received just 3,964 votes. A call for protection for Guatemalan citizens in light of recent earthquakes: 8,563.

Somebody please make this #$%!^&* stop posting political stuff out of the podium. PLEASE

I agree. This **** is only posted out of the podium for maximum views and eventually more arguing. Why close the podium if this is going to be permitted?

I don't know if some don't get it or not but many of us DO NOT care to read and or spew vitriolic political diarrhea!

...I fail to see why this should be in the podium its about Star Wars for Christs sake.

...I fail to see why this should be in the podium its about Star Wars for Christs sake.

Maybe lighthearted but still a political story
1. People petitioning the government
2. A request for government funding
3. The link by Fox news

Sorry but missing the politics is simply incredulous.

I also feel like we have a gentleman's agreement to avoid politics here, and to reserve them for the podium. Right or Left shouldn't we try to agree to that alternative. An agreement that allows one to be as political as they wish, without bothering those who abstain.
In addition if I write something pro right or left here it is an unfair selfish soapbox, because I would be taking at a stab at the opposition on neutral soil were they had mutually agreed to stand down. An obvious abuse.
A classless effort to put it kindly.

Using Greg and Johali's mentality, every single non-racing story should go in The Podium because just about every link will be from NBC/CNN/AP/FOX/MSNBC/etc/etc. And any thread can head to Podium territory. A thread about a shooting can easily turn in to a gun control debate. A thread about a celebrity can easily turn in to a Class Warfare debate.

I posted it here because it's a humorous story.

heck a racing story can turn political without much effort.

And now, it's turning personal. Is it about the content or other posters?

If we're permitted to post political baiting threads all over the board, fine, but the rule better apply to all of us so let's get it started!

People have always posted threads that have political undertones in other sections of the forum. I posted this here because, while there are political undertones, it's not political in nature. ANd it's a funny story.

If the mods felt it was political, it would've been moved. Obviously, since it's been here for two days, they don't.

Right. And I suppose we're to believe that it has nothing to do with the fact that you've been kissing a certain mods ass for the past few months? Don't even attempt to deny it as everyone here knows it.

That's okay, Andy, you have your fun and if mayhem is what you want than I'm more than able to provide my share. All I need to know are the rules and I believe I've heard them loud and clear.

I'll also add that I don't give a **** if I get banned or not as this place is becoming the bradkeselowski.com vs the andy.com site anyway and it's getting a bit old.

Weren't you, just a couple posts ago, concerned about things "getting personal" yet, there you go.

Threads like this have always been allowed in other sections. There's more than one moderator on this site and if they felt it was Podium material (which it now is because you decided to start a fight where there wasn't one), they would've moved it (as I'm sure they will).

Mayhem? This thread was civilized. I merely pointed out that one of the people (actually, now that I think about it, two people) who complained about this thread getting political has, several times in the past, posted random comments in on-topic racing threads about Barack Obama. :idunno: Doesn't bother me one bit -- but it takes some brass to criticize me for making a political comment (which, actually, never happened on here) when they do the same thing.

As for Fender and I..... where the hell did that come from, the dude hasn't even commented in this thread. Me and Fender have our disagreements, and guess where they take place?

The best part, neither of us have any animosity towards each other. You're the only one bringing that outside The Podium which you have to request to join in the first place.

I pointed out that the criteria that Greg said makes a thread Podium material would apply to almost every single thread posted here. If that's the case, then let's quit posting about celebrities since the link might come from FOX News. No more stories about dumb criminals or non-political news, because the link is from a news site, the person is charged with a crime by a government institution and the thread could turn in to a political debate.

Congratulations ... you got the whizzing competition you've been wanting since making your first post in this thread.

Also, just because there's a disagreement in a thread, or the potential for disagreement, doesn't mean a thread shouldn't be posted. Hell, VADirt and I had a civilized disagreement just the other week about SPEED Channel not airing racing. Guess what? Nobody called anyone names. Nobody brought up Barack Obama.

Nobody forced any of you to click the thread. Nobody put a gun to your head and demanded you click it. You chose to click the thread. You chose to read the article. You chose to click the link. And you chose to comment.

There's a common denominator to 99.999999999999% of every "whizzing" contest on this board.

Thank you.

And half of those whizzing competitions aren't as bad as some of y'all think they are. It's called "debating". This place would be incredibly boring if we all agreed on everything.

"Jimmie Johnson is the greatest driver in the world"
"Yeah, how could anyone say Keselowski's better?"
"I love Darrell Waltrip"
"Yep, DW's the man"
"Kyle Busch just wrecked Clint Bowyer"
"yep, Kyle just drove through him"

Andy, you post stuff for maximum visibility and you know it. What you don't realize is that your words/thoughts are only "epic", "legendary" and scholarly to you. Your opinions are no more important or factual than ANYONE else's on this board yet they're spoken as gospel and "end of story."

Let me tell you that you're no more important than any other member of this site.

The debate ends when the name childish name calling begins.

Andy, you do what you have to do and I'll do the same and we'll see if the mods will stay out of it. Fair enough?

Since you put it in quotes, tell me where I've said my beliefs are "epic" and "legendary".

I've got to be going but I'll be back in a bit to toss some back at ya' :D

Andy, you post stuff for maximum visibility and you know it.

I've posted threads in here that, after posting, I realized could get ugly and have asked moderators to move them -- and you can ask them yourself. This was nothing more than a funny, comedic story. And a couple of you got bent up over it... and it's funny because two of the people who complained about it have posted random, out of nowhere, comments about Barack Obama in other threads. One of them has carried out anti-Obama rants for two pages in race threads before.

There's a difference between "News" and "Politics". North Korea launching rockets in to space is news. The debate in DC over the thing I refuse to say by name is political.

I have to be honest, a death star isn't a serious political topic. Why turn it into one? Merely mentioning the White House doesn't make a topic political.

This is damn funny, because simply mentioning 'death star' in a White House petition will probably attract 1 million signatures from Star Wars fans. I be George Lucas got drunk and started this petition as a joke.

My apologies to WD50 for his guy not winning the championship and being forced into a Toyota. :p Some people get real wanky about these things, but that's not my problem.

I've got Andy and Fender on the same side...must've been something I said

I guess my work here is done.

The petition received so many signatures that, by default, a White House response was required.

Paul Shawcross deserves an award for this gem.

This Isn't the Petition Response You're Looking For

However, look carefully (here's how) and you'll notice something already floating in the sky -- that's no Moon, it's a Space Station!

Even though the United States doesn't have anything that can do the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs, we've got two spacecraft leaving the Solar System and we're building a probe that will fly to the exterior layers of the Sun.

We don't have a Death Star, but we do have floating robot assistants on the Space Station, a President who knows his way around a light saber and advanced (marshmallow) cannon, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which is supporting research on building Luke's arm, floating droids, and quadruped walkers.

If you do pursue a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field, the Force will be with us! Remember, the Death Star's power to destroy a planet, or even a whole star system, is insignificant next to the power of the Force.

I didn't see the original post as Podium material. I though it was damned hilarious that a petition was being passed around for the U.S. to
build a Death Star. For me, it was the responders to the original post that made it somewhat political.

Get real, folks.

Actually, the Grin and Bare It forum is probably where it belongs.
