Tell President Bush that his hydrogen cars, SUV tax
breaks and weak fuel economy increases don't add up
to effective action against oil use and global warming.

* White House "Clean" Car Plans Fail to Reduce Oil
Use or Global Warming Threat *
President Bush's "clean" car policies will unfortunately
do very little to curb our nation's voracious oil appetite,
pollution and global warming. His proposed new hydrogen-powered
"Freedom Car" will spend billions of taxpayer dollars
on speculative technology over real policy action,

while his proposed budget includes new tax breaks for
gas guzzling SUVs. Meanwhile, the Department of Transportation
has proposed new fuel economy standards for SUVs that
are far weaker than technically possible and that are
needed. Take action! Send a message to President Bush
and the Department of Transportation supporting stronger
measures to curb oil consumption and help stop global
warming.

----THIS LETTER WILL BE SENT IN YOUR NAME----
Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

I urge your Administration and the Department of Transportation

to take meaningful action to reduce the impact cars
have on America's voracious oil appetite, our environment,
and our contribution to global warming. Hydrogen cars,
tax breaks for SUVs, and weak proposed fuel economy
increases for SUVs and light trucks only dodge the
issue, or make the problem worse.

One effective action that is needed is an improvement
in the fuel economy standards you propose for light
trucks in model years 2005-2007. The small, 1.5 mile
per gallon increase proposed in your December 13, 2002
notice fails to meet the urgent need to greatly reduce
oil consumption and global warming pollution. It also
falls far short of taking advantage of economically
practical technologies that automakers could use to
improve light truck fuel economy while maintaining
safety and performance.

While your agency's proposal provides the first noticeable
increases in light truck fuel economy standards in
many years, it is far too weak. I urge you to strengthen

this proposed standard to meaningfully reduce our nation's
growing oil dependence and global warming pollution.

----END OF LETTER TO BE SENT----

Sincerely,
Kathleen Friedman
