was just thinking on the way to work this morning as the radio reported that gas in the south east could be as high as $5.00 a gallon (due to supply issues with the hurricane) guess that's their way of saying f*** you very much having said that ....

gas got to 147.00 a barrel and in Tennessee about 4.03 a gallon. now it is at 102.00 a barrel everything Ive heard from the news says every 1.00 increase in a barrel of oil equates to about .03 per gallon at the pump. so ...

147.00 - 102.00 = 45.00 X.03 = 1.35

4.03 - 1.35 = 2.68 per gallon just WTF am i missing here ?

oh like i said just another way for the oil companies to f***you !

Federal gas tax is 18.4¢ per gallon. State taxes vary from 8¢ in Alaska to 31.9¢ in New York. Some states, like Georgia whose state gas tax is 7.5¢, add a 4% sales tax. Some states also allow local communities to tax gas. State and local taxes are in addition to the fed tax.

These taxes remain constant no matter what the cost per gallon, they don't fluctuate as the cost of a barrel of oil does.

I have had a very heated debate with another over this. His stance is "supply and demand" drives the market, mine is basically the greed of speculaters. It appears with recent develpoments my arguement rings true.

Speculators can purchase oil futures, millions of barrels, on credit. NO cash outlay. They don't even have to take possession of the oil. They in turn sell the oil the next day, week or month for 1,2 5, or 10¢ more per gallon reaping millions. AFAIK there has NEVER been a speculator lose money on oil futures. Speculators dumped 60 billion, that's with a capital B, into oil futures this past year, just recently they've pulled 39 billion, big B, out of the market. The result? Gas here is now $3.34 a gallon down from $4.09 less 3 months ago.

Now, I fancy myself to be a vegtable grower extraordinaire. Now because I "speculate" there might be a drought next year I'm no longer giving them away to my neighbors, now they're 10 bucks a pound. I also do wood working and my supplier "speculates" that next year cherry and walnut lumber will be in short supply so he's now charging me twice as much as before.

Now I have no shortage of 'maters, want some? He has no shortage of lumber but we're both counting on a shortage in the future justifing our raising prices now. Seem fair???

no one is answering the ?

if crude oil is down 30% in the last month why aren't the prices at the pump ?

as i said we are getting hosed NOW by the oil companies or their distributors or both

If you will notice if you have four gas stations on corners at a crossroad as gas prices increase they will run to the sign and raise prices at daylight. and raise it twice a day as the market flucuates. But as the price of oil drops as it has here recently they seem to forget where that sign is at. They will all four hold there prices there until somebody makes a price change and they will drop it not as significantly as they raised it.

Well I went out at lunch and filled up both vehicles, they were at half tank, for $3.69. If I had gone south of town it probably would have been cheaper but then that's 7 miles 1 way and there were huge lines out into the road according to the news. I didn't think it was worth it for $0.15 a gallon or so.

at lunch it was 3.99 at the BP and believe it or not 4.39 at the wal mart and they were limiting to 10 gallons the lines reminded me of the oil embargo days

glad i filled up yesterday and my little Yaris gets between 40 and 44 MPG depending on how heavy my foot gets

I shot back up to $3.79 again today. It was $3.49 the other day. I'm sure they will blame the storms for the price increase, but it's funny how unseasonable nice weather like we've had lately doesn't have the opposite effect.

I got to get gas today/night. not looking forward to it at all.

I got a buddy who family is in Cloumbia(sp), SC and he called home last night and gas there was 5.20 and you could just get 10 gal at a time.

Prices range from $3.59 to $3.99 here in Winston Salem with a few over the $4.00 price. West of the city there was a station that had their price at $5.35. I heard rumors that in Wilmington, the price has gone as high as $8.00 but that might be just a rumor. The governor has reminded people there is a law against price gouging and it will be enforced.

The supply of gas here in the southest comes from those refineries in and around Houston and they have shut them down so the supply here is limited. Many stations have already gone dry and of course, there is a run on the gas so others will also run dry. I need gas in my car, but will try in the morning possibly before the stations run out of gas and the lines are shorter.

Them G.D. oil compaines, raping us like you wouldn't believe. Plain and simple. With the price per barrel there is no reason for gas to be this high, except for GREED. Sure there are taxes but like some one said the taxes were there before this crap started happening and our taxes have not gone up. Our gas was 3.99 at 147 a barrel, now recently the lowest was 3.61 at 103 a barrel. Now it's 101 a barrel and went to 3.69. WTF Over. This is a bunch a BS and should be delt with by the government, Oh wait.....they won't ever stop the Oil compainies because they are all in bed with each other.

Bucky, this time the price hike isn't because of the cost of a barrel of oil. It's supply. Many stations here in the south are running out of fuel. One town to the east of me is totally out. With the hurricane and where it is, plus the fact that some of the refineries are shutting down, there has been a huge run on gas. I fueled up both of our cars for $3.77 a gallon and had to wait both times. Some of the stations have lines that are reminiscent of the 70's. Those that are gouging the public aren't the oil companies this time but the independent gas stations owners. But you have it right about one thing, those who are ripping us are the greedy ones.

BUT....oil has been dropping for some time now with little relief at the pump.

I could understand the last run like you said, but the price for the last month or so don't cut it.

Just got back from dinner 3.79 :(

$3.79 across right the state line in SC.

Luckily i only drive 20 miles round trip to work and the wife works from home.

Both cars have a tank full of gas, if we are lucky we wont have to get gas for another 3 weeks.

Gass went down today
3.99 to 3.69. That's where they were before the hurricane. Now if they would drop more to represent the crude oil prices.

I filled both cars on Friday for $3.77, now it's $3.99.

North Carolina is trying to crack down on gouging and has an investigation going on with the spike in gas price. Gonna be interesting to see what they say and what happens.

In regards to price gouging:

I'm not sure about any other state than Texas, but here in the Lone Star State if a retailer is caught price gouging, the fine can be up to $20,000. BUT, if the retailer is caught price gouging Sr. Citizes, that fine can go as high as $250,000

Per a statement made by Texas' Attorney General BEFORE Hurricane Ike hit, he said that fuel retailers were able to raise the price they sell fuel AFTER they received and paid for a new shipment. I KNOW that that is total BS because I have seen numerous gas pump prices being changed and the station has not gotten taken delivery of a NEW load of fuel.

Therefore, IF you suspect you are paying an inflated price for ANYTHING, I'd definitely contact your state's Attorney Generals Office!!!

Here in NC I think they said it's $5,000 per occurrence. 1 station was as high as $7.29. The station making the news in my area went to $5.49 and he's been subpoenaed by the AG.

BP, a station close to Greensboro was selling gas for $5.69 and also has been subpoenaed. Today, to try and gain favor of the customers, they sold 4,000 gallons for $3.39. I wouldn't travel that far for that price, but if that station was in my area, I'd still never trust them again.

I've seen a receipt from one of the stations for the gas from a distributor who charged them $5.35 a gallon. I can't see that station being punished if they kept their profit margin the same, but I'd sure as heck would go after the distributor. The distributors have been the problem in the past but of course, it's the individual stations that take the heat.

Gas is $3.69 at Wawa in Waldorf.

It's $3.87 at Shell in St. Charles.
